Had an XC40 B3 since November and went for the Ultimate spec. No, there isn't a sport mode. You're in a Volvo, why do you want a sport mode? The ride is superb, the storage is brilliant and would recommend one to anyone. Fuel economy is OK, not stellar, but I can get around 400-500 miles per tank. Heated seats in the rear come as standard with Ultimate, as does a heated windscreen. The heated steering wheel is VERY HOT, so much so that any more than a 2/3 setting starts to burn your hands.

Now the negatives: Sometimes the Console software is a bit buggy and requires a restart (Simple to do, but really annoying). The rear camera is a pain (Mercedes and Audi do it brilliantly). The Speed limiter only works with the road sign reader, and often gets it wrong (20 When lights flash is a favourite); but the adaptive cruise on motorways is a dream, especially when combined with lane assist.

After years of Audis. Mercs and BMW's, the Volvo stands up well against them all.

Had my xc40 from new, 18 months now, fantastic, not a single complaint.

We just bought the XC40 plus with climate package. We absolutely love it. We've tried the VW Tiguan, Honda crv, Mercedes. Nothing compares to this.

I recently took delivery of a basic spec “core” XC40 in Vapour Grey (which my wife aptly calls “Farrow and Ball Grey”). Basic spec because it was “take it or leave it” deal from a lease company - very, very cheap (less than a Golf) if you don’t mind a 5k miles limit and no choices or options. Which I don’t as it’s a second car and we opted for Volvo because we have an XC60 (21 plate). Very pleased with it - frankly other than a rather dark interior (grey/black fabric seats, lots of black plastic, no sunroof for light) it’s just fine - the infotainment, particularly Google maps, is actually better than the top spec XC60, which doesn’t have android but Volvo’s own previous system - not as good. No 360 camera but excellent rear camera and emergency brake function (for those low bollards everyone has hit at least once). It has the B3 engine which is brisk and smooth and actually seems quieter than the B5 in the XC60 - maybe because the B5 has electric turbos? Ride is good, I expected it to be a bit more fidgety than the XC 60 due shorter wheelbase and no air suspension but it’s only noticeable on bad roads (of which we now have too many).

Owned an XC40 nearly 4 years in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. I love everything about the car except the battery went dead twice already in the last 4 years necessitating the car to be towed on both occasion with no low battery warning. The battery was replaced on both occasions. The car is serviced annually. as per schedule recommended by Volvo.

My son lives in Houston and when we go shopping almost everybody starts their cars on their phones when in the queue for paying to get the air con running before they go outside to the car park, because it’s so hot. It’s common practice.

I like the fact the XC40 operates an android interface. I’m an iPhone user but as I like to use google maps and Spotify predominantly, I won’t have to plug my phone in for Apple Car Play just leave it wireless charging. Ordered a B4 in onyx black having previously owed a xc60 and Q3 I’m looking forward to running this car for the next few years.

We test drove an XC40 two weeks ago. We fell in love with the car, but we were unsure about the long term costs of owning/repairing the vehicle. So, we ended up at Lexus and went that route. We still have a lot of love for the XC40 though. Fabulous little SUV!

I have an XC40 and love it - no sport mode but there IS a “toggle” on the infotainment panel to change the steering to “stiff” - worth checking out.

Hi Nick - have owned owned since March, having had two M-B GLC's in succession, last one a 300D PP Executive with Airmatic air suspension - would say that Volvo is equally as comfortable on normal roads.
Re driving mode, you're quite right that the car encourages smooth, 'go with the flow' driving and is more relaxing for that, particularly on long drives. BTW., you can change gears manually if you wish.
One feature you didn't mention is 'Google Assistant.' Had some concerns about touchscreen functions etc., this system not only lets you choose car features - a/c., radio or media, heat up/down etc., make calls/hear messages etc., but you can also ask questions, and say 'navigate to M&S' and it will - stress free and pretty accurate. Also updates over the air.
So... very safe and well built, high specs for the price, smooth, quiet and £23000 less than the full spec GLC I was considering.
That''s why I bought one.

I've had an XC40 B3 since mid-May and so far, it has met my expectations. As with all the cars there are pros and cons but seeing what you can get for 43.000 euros these days the Volvo offers quite a lot (I have the Plus version with some extras). Regarding what you're saying @13:05 I think that it has to do with Adaptive Pedal Response. It's a setting that you can turn on/off and basically has to do with the speed limits. Instead of warning you with a sound, it doesn't allow you to go beyond the speed limit, unless you press more on the gas pedal.

Very good review and very fair. I could add that the direction is without feedback and you feel the weight when you stop. But the car is very confortable and materials inside are very qualitative. Very good car.

I had several Volvo's. Since a few months it's a Fjord blue B4 ultimate. Globally a nice car, but there are some practical choices that Volvo made which I really do not understand.
The trash bin is a useless marketing gag. Everybody mentions it, but nobody adds that the armrest is consequently way too short.
The display intensity was previously set by a practical small rotary knob, it could be used blindly. Now you have to look at the screen, select settings, select display, scroll down for intensity, and slide or rather fiddle to get it as intended. Doing this when entering a tunnel is close to suicide. The XC40 had the knob till last year's model change, the location in the plastic cover is still there, but the button is gone.
Google maps is fine, but when it is on the screen, nothing is shown nowhere what radio station or media is playing. If you want to know or change, please touch, touch touch...
You want to know the time? You can find it in small letters at the top of the central display. Previously it was shown much larger and also in front of you on the driver display. Not anymore altough there is plenty of room for it as before. One can argue that leaving out a knob is saving money, but no longer showing usefull information.... I do not understand.
These 'details' rarely are mentionned in reviews, I also discovered it only afer some days of use of the new car.
But I hope that Volvo will return to it's Swedish practical sense and will upgrade Over The maybe also offer a display intensity button as a kit.

In Presets, select a drive mode to start from: Eco, Comfort, Dynamic or Polestar Engineered*.

Thanks again for a good review! I do like the XC40 with its great body styling. But I drive around 30, 000 km/year in Scandinavia so the natural selection for me has been diesel GLA 2024 and 4-matic model. Compared to my 2020 GLA model this is really a comfortable drive, superb engine and finely tuned 8-speed gearbox. The accelerating power even without the Sport-mode is amazing. Although I am a die-hard diesel mercedes guy, however have to admit, that the XC40 is "more SUV" in looks Perhaps IF (yes if) Volvo had continued with diesel engines I would have had a really tough choice between the two models. However, do you rate the Mercedes GLA as tecknically better generally, especially the driving experience?

Test drove one last week. It is absurd that you can not turn the center screen off. Despite some manuals saying to hold the center "home" button, it does not turn the screen off, rather it puts it in cleaning mode (can clean it without the buttons being activated), or it reboots the screen. I just don't want bright screen illuminated all the time.

I had one for a few days as a courtesy car. I love Volvos, but thought this was, well, dull ! Very grey inside, seats too firm, instrumentation uninspiring. Was very glad to get back to the comfort of my 6 yr old V90.
