I was thinking of using a soldering iron to melt a vertical hole, put the string in and wait for it to refreeze. You suggestion is neater

Amazing trick, I did not guessed it as I did with other puzzles, but it was worthwhile learning experience and next time I know to think more possibilities :)

Sad to think that glacier might well be on the way to disappearing entirely in a few decades. NZ's glaciers (where I'm assuming you were) are retreating alarmingly fast.
