ISO-Invariant Cameras - What You Need to Know

ISO-invariant camera sensors are more common than you'd think. In fact, nearly every new mirrorless camera and even some older DSLRs are ISO-invariant. But what does that mean?
ISO-invariant camera sensors are practically ISO-less. As long as you don't blow out highlights, you can adjust the ISO to whatever you'd like and then fix the exposure in post-processing. If all other settings are kept the same, brightening in post versus increasing the ISO in the field will result in the same amount of noise and detail in your image.
So, how can you use this to your advantage?
If you shoot on an ISO-invariant camera, it's still important to pick the correct shutter speed and aperture to gather the maximum amount of light. But you don't need to worry so much about what to set the ISO at since you can compensate for an image that is too bright or too dark in post-processing with no consequence. I find this helpful for Milky Way photography since I commonly see many photographers getting hung up on how bright the image should be in the field and trying to adjust the ISO to compensate.
