Cool, I have been making little fire starters like that for years. Except I dip half the jute in wax and it keeps a flame for 4-6 minutes. great addition to any fire kit.

Very nice brother! Never tried it with jute. But I've held cb&v and birch against the spine of my knife. Jute and striker is a good idea.
Good demo buddy!

My best foolproof easy firestarting kit is just an old Coghlan sparker tool for a Coleman type lantern, a hank of jute twine, and a candle. The sparker tool throws a big fat spark precisely where you want it, in this case, right into the end of some frayed jute. As you've shown, it will set the jute aflame very quickly, which you then use to light the candle. After that, it's easy to get even wet sticks going. If you use the trick birthday candles that you can't blow out, even wind won't defeat you.

I wouldn't recommend striking the rod with the serrated edge, it will strip the rod and create an undesirable rough texture on it. The rod should be struck with the smooth edge of the steel striker.
