The 5 Most Expensive Military Mega-Projects Of All Time

The world spent about $1.9 trillion globally on the military in 2019, but the US budget for 2021 is estimated to be a huge chunk of that-- about $934 billion. It’s no wonder that they’re responsible for some of the most expensive military projects in history, like the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, estimated to cost $1.5 trillion. Or what about their advanced Ballistic Missile Defense System, which has cost an estimated $300 billion? It might seem like a lot of money, but these military programs have created some of the most advanced combat weapons, programs, and vehicles in the entire world. The only problem is that as time goes on, the budget for each of these projects keeps increasing.

Take the DDG-51 Guided Missile Destroyer, for instance. Due to inflation and design improvement, the cost per ship has increased from $1.8 billion to $2.4 billion. The impressive Virginia-class Attack Submarine has also gotten an upgrade, including $22 billion to further improve the covert capabilities of one of the quietest subs in the world. There’s also the USS Gerald R. Ford Aircraft Carrier, which the Pentagon is expected to spend $40 billion on by the time it's ready for deployment. We also can’t forget some of the problems that complicate things, like the $400,000 it cost to unclog the Ford’s complicated toilet system.
