ESSAY
"For the first time in decades, India is experiencing a revolution"-Ketan Waghmare
Government of India on 8th November 2016 demonitized its currency as done before in 1946 and 1978. Demonetization is an act of stripping a currency unit of its legal tender. It is done due to disproportionate increase in the circulation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.
The drastic measure has been undertaken keeping in mind the short term difficulties and long term benefits for the country. This significant robust step would curb the menace of growing counterfeit currency, multiple cases of tax evasion on large scale, accumulation of black money, terror financing, contraband circulation and to wipe off corruption. It would also be helpful to put an end to parallel economy which is 23% of country's GDP. A transparent cashless economy would be created by reducing the overall dependency on cash. Though in starting daily wagers, sex workers, home makers and common people suffered due to shortage of currency that made the dreams of the average man costlier yet black money was seized , corrupt bureaucrats were caught red-handed which provided little satisfaction to them
However, the government while maintaining the secrecy could have kept enough cash reserve ready to flood the market. More kiosks should have been setup for easy exchange. Large scale collaboration with foreign banks would have helped better. Thus this can prove to be a” blessing in disguise” for India. This masterstroke hit by our Prime Minister would surely strengthen our economic growth.
