WhyMPUSD: Monterey High School Senior Diego Casapia

Diego Casapia, a senior at Monterey High School, has made his mark as an active student leader, musician, and advocate for his peers. As the youngest in his family, Diego is preparing to graduate this spring and looks forward to pursuing aerospace engineering in college. His journey at Monterey High has been defined by academic achievement, personal growth, and a commitment to helping others.

Diego’s deep connection to music has been a defining part of his high school experience. He plays the viola and currently serves as the Music Cabinet President. Reflecting on his early days at Monterey High, Diego shared how he started as the least experienced member of his section but steadily improved through hard work and private lessons. This year, his dedication paid off as he earned the position of section leader for the violas.

“I fell in love with music at Monterey High,” Diego said. “The program has given me so many opportunities, like trips to Disney, where we get to showcase our talent and grow as musicians.”

In addition to his musical accomplishments, Diego has excelled academically. He’s particularly passionate about math and has taken advantage of dual enrollment opportunities at Monterey Peninsula College (MPC). This semester, he completed a college-level calculus course, which he described as “eye-opening” and an essential step in preparing for university-level coursework.

Diego’s academic rigor is evident in his list of college applications, which includes Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, San Jose State, UC Berkeley, and other prestigious institutions. His dream is to study aerospace engineering and eventually work for companies like SpaceX or NASA.

Diego’s leadership extends beyond music and academics. Inspired by a friend, he became a student trustee on the school board, where he’s used his voice to advocate for student needs. One of his key initiatives was addressing the use of AI software in schools.

“I believe AI is a tool,” he explained. “We need to teach students how to use it responsibly now, so they’re prepared for the future.”

Diego has also worked to increase awareness of board meetings and town halls, emphasizing the importance of student and parent involvement.

“It’s crucial for students to have a platform to share their concerns and ideas,” he said.

Diego credits his parents and siblings for inspiring his hard work and resilience. As a first-generation college student, he’s eager to set an example for others. He also expressed gratitude for the supportive teachers and staff at Monterey High, including his AP Physics teacher, Mr. Freeman, and his English teacher, Mr. Woods.

Looking ahead to graduation, Diego is excited about the next chapter in his life.

“I’m ready for college and the new challenges it brings,” he said. “Monterey High has prepared me well, and I’m thankful for everything it’s given me.”

Diego’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and a supportive community. As he prepares to walk across the stage this spring, he leaves behind a legacy of excellence and advocacy that will inspire future generations of students at Monterey High.
