Lightyear DID NOT Impress Tim Allen!

OG Buzz Lightyear Tim Allen was NOT impressed with Lightyear. He didn't think it felt like a Toy Story movie at all, which is why he distanced himself from it. "It just seems kind of...I don't know," Tim Allen said. "There's no connection. I just wish there was a better connection [to the toy]." OOF!

Toy Story 2 did Buzz Lightyear justice in the beginning of the movie it was awesome seening that as a kid! Not to mention added more of the Lore by adding Zurg.

I've said it before and I'll say it a thousand times: _Buzz Lightyear of Star Command_ is the perfect in-universe origin for the character. It worked because it was very much made for children (with humor adults could enjoy as well) and was made in the same era as _Toy Story_ so it had the right style and tone. When the toys sit around a TV to watch the cartoon, I believe that it's happening in canon.

There was a "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" movie starring Tim Allen, made about 20 years ago, the kinda-sorta pilot for the series. The problem for Disney is that the writing team was Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle who were persona non grata at The House of Mouse for a while. The movie went out of print while the pair ran "The Penguins of Madagascar" at Nickelodeon.

Zurg was what killed this movie for me and my friends, it was yet another poorly done twist villain from Disney that left no true impact.
The only positive from this, is that everyone is talking about the cartoon series again.

They should've made it in the style of an 80s sci-fi adventure film.

Give it a synthy soundtrack, make it look like it was shot with miniatures and pre-CGI optical effects.

Throw in an occasional visible matte line or janky stop animation creature, etc, etc.

Pixar animators simulating practical effects.... NOW you have something.

Only other person aside from John Lasseter that knows Buzz Lightyear the most is Tim Allen.

And if he says this isn't Buzz, that's deep.

I watched Midnights Edge discussion about it thus afternoon and a lot of what Kamran mentioned made sense; Lightyear and a lot of recent Pixar flicks have been on the downturn due to Lassiter being booted because of his experience with handling stories. He's not perfect but when it comes to Toy Story and it's characters, Jon would have known what to do.

Lightyear shows a lot of signs of team mismanagement and lack of creativity and understanding of the source. It's clear what the crew wanted out of the film and didn't care about anything else. That's why it looks so boring and the pacing is shit; it's made by people who don't know how to tell a story or deliver a message but feel that because of who THEY are, everyone else is obligated to waste time on them.

They also didn't want to work under Jon's method where he would make them go back and redo things if needed. They essentially wanted the type of workspace fostered in TV animation bit Jon wasn't keen to that soooo....this is what you're left with.

Who could blame him? There's no magic or whimsy in the movie, it's too realistic. With the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command movie, it was colorful, the animation was amazingly dynamic, and the characters were fun to watch. I know I said the same thing in my last comment, but it makes me sad to see Pixar is kind of losing that magic that it had. I'm torn between "They could have made a 3D version of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" and "They didn't need to make a Lightyear movie at all".

Yes I feel like the great talents that made Pixar special are leaving, but I also feel like Disney is making the majority decisions with Pixar (straight to streaming, the story), and unless Pixar doesn't go back to what made them great, they're going to lose to the competition and lose their reputation of being one if not the greatest animation company real quick.

The magic of Pixar came from the PEOPLE who worked there. It was a huge mistake for Disney to let Lasseter go

people actually like Tim Allen, regardless of what Hollywood wants. the guy is charismatic. if he wasn't, he wouldn't have run home improvement for 8 seasons with a 9th ready to go (which he declined) and Last Man Standing for 6 seasons which was unceremoniously dropped regardless of being the 2nd highest viewed show for ABC during it's running. Chris Evans is alright. But people like Tim Allen because he is who he is, without kowtowing to social pressures. He's also THE BUZZ LIGHTYEAR. Go remake Galaxy Quest with anyone else as captain. It'll probably be fine, but it won't be the movie we all love.

Hopefully the new Minions movie over perform in order to stick it to Disney!

I 100% agree with Kneon and I have said this myself, why not just make a Buzz Lightyear of Star Command movie. They could have even showed reruns of the show to introduce kids to these characters before the movie came out!

The trailers for Rise of Gru looks like they're staying true to the concept and characters. I'm seeing this movie this weekend. Did I want to see "Lightyear"? No. I didn't even know about the LGBTQ+ scene. I saw the toys, which look lackluster, and then I couldn't get excited about "Lightyear".
