"When I was 12, growing up in Texas, I briefly worked at a kid's park that had been around since the 1940s. There were also annual rodeo carnivals and various county fairs I would go to, along with Astroworld, an amusement park that you could almost see from my house.
There was great joy in these places, but also a darkness. County Fair is enigmatic & shimmering. It's all of these places for me. It’s a song that knows where I live".

One of my favourite ever songwriters, Cathal Coughlan, sadly died last year. In one of his last interviews he commented on this song, saying it '..always chokes me up. I could die happy if I could write such a song'. If you don't know him, he was highly regarded (by a modest but dedicated following) for his dark, ferociously intelligent, often deeply melancholic, sardonic songs, but this little insight showed a side of him that reminded us that he was the sensitive soul we always knew he was. He also recognised a great songwriter, one to another.

These two lines sum up the song for me - that feeling of momentary joy, masking a terrible underlying melancholy.

This is a work of art and it makes me cry and I love it.

Playing the album on repeat, it's my new favorite John Grant album. Beautiful, melancholic, sometimes strange, futuristic melodies with lyrics that can be clever & sweet, but also sardonic & funny. All this + John's soulful baritone in a sonic landscape that I dig very much: sometimes lush, sometimes tight, mean and funky. Without a doubt one of my favorites this year
