The 2023 Seat Leon is a Spanish hatchback that has gained a reputation for being a superior choice to many of its competitors, despite lagging in sales. It is considered a family car, similar in size to the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf.

The model offers a variety of powertrain options, including mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines, but does not come in an all-electric variant. The PHEV option, known as the e-Hybrid, couples a 1.4-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, providing an electric-only range of 40 miles.

The recommended version is the 1.5 TSI with FR trim. Although the 130bhp petrol engine doesn't make it the quickest vehicle on the road, it is economical, flexible, and much cheaper than the more powerful options. This trim also includes features such as sports suspension, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and rain-sensing wipers.

For those looking for additional features, the Leon FR Sport is an option. It includes larger alloy wheels, a full LED light bar at the back, a heated steering wheel and front seats, electric driver’s seat adjustment, and suede upholstery.

The Leon also boasts a solid infotainment system. Entry-level SE trim versions come with an 8.3in touchscreen, DAB radio, a seven-speaker sound system, and smartphone mirroring capabilities. Higher trim levels upgrade to a 10in touchscreen and additional features such as built-in sat-nav and natural voice recognition.

Practicality is another strong point, with most versions offering 380 litres of boot space, enough for six carry-on suitcases. However, this decreases by around 100 litres if you opt for the PHEV engine. This makes the non-PHEV versions comparable in capacity to the Ford Focus and slightly larger than the Volkswagen Golf.

Lastly, the 2023 Seat Leon is part of the VW Group and shares its MQB platform with cars like the VW Golf, Audi A3, and Skoda Octavia. This shared platform helps to reduce development costs, while also allowing each model to maintain unique characteristics. Prices for the 2023 model start from £22,225 for the entry-level petrol, rising to £29,195 for the mild-hybrid and £34,305 for the plug-in version, with a total of six individual trims to choose from.

VW and SEAT really F'd up their new generation design. Plus the new Polo looks like a Golf 7 and the new Ibiza looks like the Leon 5F. What the hell is going on here?
