I've been a full time artist for 20 years and I agree with this video.

This is a strategy that I figured out for the reasons you cited, but also, this would be a great way to use colours one would have already fresh on the palette, so waste would not be such a big issue. I'm a beginner, but in setting up a studio space in a limited apartment makes for a sense of frugality and keeping the momentum going. It really makes sense. Thanks - it means I'm in a good groove.👍

I agree. If you paint in layers and have to wait for one layer to dry before you work on the next layer. I agree with you that keeping to one subject is very important and differentiates the professional from the amateur.

The best advice for artists I’ve seen on the ‘net!

Yes, this is true. I’ve been in the artist for over 24 years. During those 24 years I stopped completely for four years life gets in the way.
I do that pretty much in my practice. Sometimes I get sidetracked for one reason or the other but I try to continue on and I always do for the last 4 years. Great advice !!!!Thank you for all the good knowledge! Mark M . New York Westchester county

Good advice. I like to have 4 to 6 in progress all at different stages.

100% agree... Great advice Mark... I have painted things to fill in the gaps in the past which turned out below par...

Mark, excellent advise, I also employ this process. I always have multiple paintings going at various stages and I find my work is more interesting and not “forced, it is more creative”. Thanks for posting this video.👍😃

Not simple at all, those are some very good tips to keep us motivated in our quest to get better, and do more art. Thank you Mark.

Boy this is me now! I'm going to pull out something that I wasn't crazy about, then prep a canvas and work on the one that has been sitting on my easel patiently waiting for me. Thank you, Mark 😊❤

Like others have mentioned I have many more than four pieces in these various stages. I travel to art festivals and gather inspiration to and from on my journeys, do design and computer work for multiple pieces, prep multiple panels for specific projects and common sizes, then I'll rough in my designs. I also have a number of simpler designs that I'll repeat variations of bc they sell well at art festivals and I'm always in front of new audiences. I'll have some smalls, some mediums, something more intricate, then one or two very large pieces and I'll jump around to fill holes in my inventory and keep my booth looking good. By working this way I never experience any kind of artists block, I just get to work on whatever I feel like doing that day or on what I think I should have done for an upcoming show. Then I'll also stack up pieces for varnishing day and usually finish several or more at once along with making sure they're all ready to hang, signed, staple business cards to the back etc.

This is brilliant advice. I'm excited to paint too many ideas/subjects so I overwhelm myself trying to decide which one to paint. I can have several ideas going at the same time.

Never thought about this, but it makes total sense. Will implement this. Thank you.

Oh dear I have like 10-12 projects on different stages and it's pretty much always like that

This is great information. I’m constantly out looking for my next work. Taking video though, I can then scroll through them and find the view I’m looking for. I have several canvases of various sizes at the ready. Sometimes I work on 2 simultaneously.

I like the way you so casually threw in Midjourney A.I as part of your creative process. Ive already arrived at the multiple paintings technique, took me long enough. Though for me it's only three active canvases at any one time, the fourth is the idea forming in my head.

Ah yes, so my constant state of being fired up about an idea, getting decently through, dropping it, starting another, repeating the cycle, all while also snapping photos of or jotting down other ideas throughout this time-- is actually professional. Good to know😂
(And eventually finishing them, yes.)
