After so much uncertainty, today a new Guinness World Record for the biggest wave ever surfed was announced!!!
At 12:00 PM today, May 24th, 2022, Sebastian Steudtner officially holds the new Guinness World Record for surfing what would be the biggest wave ever surfed, a day that will be forever marked in the history of surfing.
Sebastian becomes the third surfer to achieve this record at Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal.
Garret McNamara set the record in 2011 with a wave of 23.77 meters, later surpassed by Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa with a wave of 24.38 meters in 2017, who held the Guinness record for 5 years until today.
The wave with which Sebastian takes the record is a wave surfed in the October 2020 swell, a massive wave of 26.21 meters (86 ft), undoubtedly the largest swell of that winter on the Portuguese coast. He was towed into the wave by none other than "Alemao de Maresias," considered by many as the best tow-in pilot in the world, executing a perfect maneuver that positioned Sebastian perfectly to ride what became the biggest surfed wave ever.
Other surfers attempted to break Rodrigo Koxa's record: Vinicious DosSantos campaigned with a right-hander surfed this winter. Lucas Chumbo also made an attempt, surfing a wave that was in contention with Sebastian during the same swell, and another wave surfed on January 7th. This latter wave is still in the process of being measured, leaving the question open as to how long Sebastian can hold onto this new record.

Thank you!

No, he didn't surf it today, he surfed it on October 2020. It's just today that Guinnness has certified the record, that's all.

This was the largest recorded wave surfed. Sebastian said that he and other surfers at Nazare may have surfed waves that were definitely over 86 feet but there is no footage.

Any wave where you can drop in for 15-20+ consecutive seconds and STILL not make it to the bottom is a BIG...DAMN...WAVE.

What record are they referring too?? If it's wave height then they are sadly mistaken!! It doesn't mean that I'm not impressed because I am!! I get goose bumps just watching the damn thing.

Amazing! For the measurement, do they use the height of the wave, or how high up the surfer is? I see a lot of videos of "huge waves surfed" but most of the time the surfer is only a fraction of the way up. Still impressive and dangerous though

Esta si es la ola mas grande del mundo, pero la ola de la película Interestelar era mas grande ;)
