After so much uncertainty, today a new Guinness World Record for the biggest wave ever surfed was announced!!!
At 12:00 PM today, May 24th, 2022, Sebastian Steudtner officially holds the new Guinness World Record for surfing what would be the biggest wave ever surfed, a day that will be forever marked in the history of surfing.
Sebastian becomes the third surfer to achieve this record at Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal.
Garret McNamara set the record in 2011 with a wave of 23.77 meters, later surpassed by Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa with a wave of 24.38 meters in 2017, who held the Guinness record for 5 years until today.
The wave with which Sebastian takes the record is a wave surfed in the October 2020 swell, a massive wave of 26.21 meters (86 ft), undoubtedly the largest swell of that winter on the Portuguese coast. He was towed into the wave by none other than "Alemao de Maresias," considered by many as the best tow-in pilot in the world, executing a perfect maneuver that positioned Sebastian perfectly to ride what became the biggest surfed wave ever.
Other surfers attempted to break Rodrigo Koxa's record: Vinicious DosSantos campaigned with a right-hander surfed this winter. Lucas Chumbo also made an attempt, surfing a wave that was in contention with Sebastian during the same swell, and another wave surfed on January 7th. This latter wave is still in the process of being measured, leaving the question open as to how long Sebastian can hold onto this new record.
Thank you!
