Fun fact: The first person I ever heard reference this was actually my friend, @Kryoz. He said it was an old joke story one of his relatives used to tell him when he was younger. We've been saying it on and off for at least 4-5 years at this point. Happy to be a part of the resurgence of the meme.

First heard this back in the 90s from a kid in my class. There was also the worms one. "Worms? I hate worms, they make me sick. Sick? I was sick once, they took me to the hospital, I died there. They buried me in the ground, there were worms there."

Imagine being locked in a rubber room with rats and they suddenly start rotating.

It's definitely, as you say, an "analog meme that transferred to the realm of digital existence". I don't know it's origin but my friends and I learned and repeated it in when I was in elementary school in Florida between 1990-1995. The version I heard was also a bit different and more complex, along the lines of "Crazy? Once I was crazy. They locked me up in room with no doors or windows. Eventually, I died. They buried me in the dirt, and worms ate my body. Worms? I hate worms. Worms make me crazy. Once I was crazy.... etc" Imo its delivery has such a particular cadence that it's hard to imagine it to have spread any other way than by mouth. Thanks for the nostalgia trip.

One of my friends in my Boy Scout troop began saying this as a joke every once in a while, until everyone in the troop pretty much had memorized it. A couple weeks back we went to summer camp and he said it only a few times but stopped after I told him it would end up spreading around camp. We were too late, and more and more people started saying it. Lo and behold On the final night during camp-wide campfire a troop got up for their skit and began reciting the repetition of words we had come to hate. I looked at my friend who started it and was reminded of the imagery of Oppenheimer watching the first test of the nuclear bomb, viewing the terrible movement he had started. We had become the protagonist of the phrase, the camp a rubber room, and the ones saying it becoming the rats.

During a previous period in my life, I experienced a challenging situation that caused me to question my mental stability. I was confined to a secure facility, commonly referred to as a psychiatric ward or a therapeutic environment, where I was surrounded by individuals facing similar struggles. The conditions within this facility were less than ideal, with some rooms resembling cells and occasionally inhabited by rodents. Unfortunately, the presence of rats exacerbated my mental state, intensifying my feelings of unease and instability.

I just recently started a new job. It was my second day and I was a bit nervous. It had gotten busy out of nowhere, once the crowds of people stopped flowing in, one of the managers came up to me and my coworkers saying “man, today’s been crazy”. Like sleeper agents, all three of us looked up from what we were doing at and stared at them saying “Crazy? I was crazy once. They locked me in a room. A rubber room. A rubber room with rats. And rats make me crazy. Crazy?” Repeating it like six times. The managers just looked at us with utter fear, they just slowly walked away from us. They let us off early that day 🤣🤣🤣🤣

As someone who got restrained by a straightjacket and locked up in a rubber room with no human interaction, I can confirm this is indeed a certified hood classic.

The oral version I heard when I was younger is "Crazy? I was once crazy. They put me in a rubber room. I died there. They buried me in the cold hard floor. And there were rats. Rats! They drive me crazy! Crazy? I was once crazy."

I used to say this all the time about 5 years ago in school cuz my Golf teacher told it to me once, but it went a little differently. It's weird seeing it become popular again as a meme

I think the origins might have something to do with one of Lovecraft's works: The Rats in the Walls. Shortening the entire thing: In the end the main character gets locked up in a mental asylum, where he claims the rats are haunting him.

This is the song that doesn't end. Yes, it goes on and on, my friend. Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was, but they'll continue singing forever just because
This is the song that doesn't end...

I was playing risk of rain 2 online and found someone who repeated this over and over, and we eventually ended up adapting it to some of the enemies and environments in the game. Most fun I’ve had in a while

they locked me in a room -- a round room and told me to sit in a corner, but there were no corners; it drove me crazy ...
