Self-Defeating Tariffs on China - Richard Wolff

"[China] found customers in the rest of the world, they lowered the price, that even offset part of the US tariffs, and here we are years afterwards and they're still the dominant player [in solar panels], more dominant today than they were then. [The tariffs] didn't work and it often doesn't.... When it's talked about now it's not understood that part of the cause of inflation in the United States is US policy blocking China and indeed other parts of the world from bringing goods. So it's a little bit self-defeating. No, let me take that back. It's very self-defeating." - Richard D. Wolff

Stuck Nation: Can the United States Change Course on Our History of Choosing Profits Over People?

“Hennelly brilliantly analyzes our capitalist crises and how individuals cope with them, tragically but often heroically. He helps us draw inspiration and realistic hope from how courageous Americans are facing and fixing a stuck nation.”
- Richard D. Wolff

I was amazed by the Chinese government's determination to lift most of its people out of poverty in a very short period. At least they look out for their people.

"We acknowledge competition only when we are guaranteed to win in it!" - logic of a spoiled child, not a world leading state.

America is on a downward spiral.
Here in south east asia, we're now openly insulting the US on daily based talk.
The way US handle covid
The way US handle is making us to distrust USA.

It is called: shooting yourself in the foot and don't even realize it and so you blame your competitor who is totally innocent of this.

I all of a sudden got to thinking about a line from one of the movies featuring Hannibal Lecter. I think it was The Red Dragon.
Will Graham, played by Edward Norton interviews Hannibal Lecter and is complimented on managing to finally capture Lecter. And responds "Yes, but of course, you were at a disadvantage."
"How so?", Lecter inquires
"You are insane."
And that is kind of the problem for American leadership the past few decades. They are fucking insane.

Thank you, anyone with basic economic principle/knowledge: tariffs only add additional cost to the end users' expenditure.

The USA and China both have huge markets that weaponizing those markets is possible. The major difference is that China can source its imports (mainly commodities) from many different nations and the USA can't because China's manufacturing sector is so dominant.

This is not only self-defeating but also insane because they keep on doing things over and over and expecting different results.

2:44 tough and rumble -- should be rough and tumble, but Prof. Wolff's choice of words fits the stance of US foreign policy. Posing tough and always looking for a rumble. Came for the economics lesson, pleasantly surprised by the wordplay.

Sorry proff, just need to point out that uyghur population has been more double since 1949 when the prc was founded…a lot of infrastructure has been built up there..road, bridge, high speed railway…. No need to mention their income and living quality of common people there have been improved a lot….but as minority, the gov give them a lot rights, eg. they can entry university at much lower exam points…god knows how profound it is…. So I don’t think it’s right….to compare what us has done in the Middle East . Not even closed…..
