Clarifying the Polish Holocaust Restitution Bill

THE RUNDOWN | A new bill in Poland to limit compensation to Jews who lost property during WWII has stirred controversy. It comes shortly after another controversial Holocaust bill was passed denying Polish responsibility for the Holocaust. Some claim compensating Holocaust victims, namely Jews, will bankrupt the country. The World Jewish Restitution Organization's Eric Gallagher discusses with Polish lawyer Grzegorz Wozniak.

The Jewish property, consisting of houses and tenement buidlings were completely destroyed during the IIWW (see old photos of Warsaw which was methodically razed down by Germans). Polish people have re-built those houses and now, suddenly, some Jews organizations want those houses back. What is especially painful to the Poles is that the "Polish holocaust" phrase has popped up recently, probably to try to force Polish authorties to pay. Pay for what? Germans, the perpetrators, have aready paid.

In this case, Jews who own property in Israel now should pay compensation to the previous (Arab) land owners, who were forced to leave in 1948 when Israel came into existence.

What about restitution of Palestinian properties in present-day so called "Israel" - a land, that was 100 years ago called Palestine... How about this people who lost their lands and homes.... What about Israel announcing planned annexetion of Jordan valley...?

This is absurd, Jewish institutions are not entitled to anything. Polish citizens of Jewish faith lived in Poland for over 500 years, they were citizens of Poland because they were probably not of Israel, which did not exist and was artificially created in 1958 in Palestine.
