I've never understood Hegel. (Of course, my philosophy background is all in analytic philosophy, many of whose philosophers were reacting against Hegel.) So thanks for the short lesson. I will, however, continue to go back to G. E. Moore on occasion.

I understood this to be reflective self consciousness, where the 'other' is not (at the start at least) another person, but *literally* itself.
