Wow, very impressed. SAL is a well-known name in the Pacific heavy sea-lift industry. I'm glad to see they maintain their equipment and engines so well! That's a beautiful 9L! Good startup procedure, and glad to hear you using the "Stand Clear" klaxon, too.

The engineer is checking for leaks around the charge-air manifold at each rocker box (he puts his hand on the joiner flange to feel for leaks), after the turbocharger spins up (the whining noise in the background), aroune 430 RPM.

Agreed very clean engine room and engine

Agreed. A 9L like this, with the turbo at full charge, is about 110 dBa. That's the same as most air raid sirens.

All systems go. We have lift off. Going throttle up.

some of the old diesels on ships I have been on you could stand in the hatchway with the door open smoking a cigarette and watch the smoke going down the engine room

Every rockerarm casing includes a part of the charge air manifold and the worker in the video is checking the sealings of the connections for leakages!!

I think he's checking for leaks in the inlet air piping leading to the cylinders.

i think he's more checking to see if all the cylinders are firing by checking each one is hot

Could you imagine a truck with that kind of engine holy shit

You would not feel by the temperature if any cylinder doesn't fire because these engines are pre-warmed before they're started

This engine is tiny compared to the new Maersk line diesels. which are around 100k hp, A hell of a lot more efficient too, with a 50% saving of CO2. Cargo capacity is around 18000 containers, which equates to a train around 110km LONG!!! The train would burn 100's of times more fuel than this would. (As quoted by the bumpf on the maersk webpage) The Generators are usually around this size tho. The big engines usually run around 100 rpm ish as a maximum

If you don't wear ear protection around an engine that big you will loose your hearing within hours of standing a few feet from it.
