I agree, but there is no way that the NBA is going to change anything. The newer generations of NBA fans aren't trying to see low scoring games due to a team having a dominant defense. The NFL is doing the same thing. All of the new rules are made with the intention of making scoring and highlight plays easier.

Inconsistent officating is more frustrating. Even when they see things they don't call it or make the wrong call. Very confusing

The hand check isnt going to stop anything. The pace and the amount of 3pters teams shoot is why offense is going crazy. In 2003 teams were averaging like 15-19 3's a gm. Compared to like 25-35 per game rn. Also theyve legislated out the athletic, defensive player who cant score or shoot at all but can play physical defense. Every team had at least one or two guys like this on there squad. Unfortunately its not going back

I don't think they even need to change rules. They just need to tell their refs to stop being so soft. I have seen so many stupid fouls and techs called its outrageous

I think defenders also added some charisma to the game. Think of the likes of Payton, Mutombo, Bradley…getting through those guys’ defense made a dunk or a basket even more exciting

I miss the 80’s 90’s NBA. I miss that Bad Boys NBA. Where a flagrant two of today was a simple foul of yesteryear.

Even with hand checking they would still score like crazy. Offense has evolved so much since the 2000s. Hell most bigs look like guards and a lot of guards are the same height as most small fowards back then. Conditioning has also gotten much better so elite players can play a lot of minutes and score much more points

Theres a couple of things you didn't mention that impact the scoring: in 2003 the illegal defence rule (you cant send help from helpside!) Had just been abolished. This is the reason so many post players could dominate in the 90s and there was so much one on one. In 2003 the offenses hadnt yet countered how to beat the new helpside defence that was suddenly packing the paint.

Furthermore it was a slugshow. The Mike d'antoni 7 seconds or less Suns would be last in pace in today s NBA. The 90s and 00s were very slow in general. The 80s however had some teams (Denver nuggets!) That played even faster than the pacers today and guess what: they scored over 120 points in multiple seasons barely shooting any threes. And this was with hand checking and illegal defence!

The rule that drives me insane is how much offensive players are allowed to bulldoze into their defender without getting an offensive foul called. Thinking basketball did a fantastic video on how the rules have evolved to benefit the offensive player

My favorite players ever are Kobe, A.I, and Curry. I love offense. And I’ve been saying for years the NBA needs to bring back “a form” of handchecking. The talented perimeter players would have to get in their bags even deeper which would produce better highlights for the fans.

Wouldn't really help, because guess what we also did in 2003, we removed illegal defense, which reduced scoring. Because around 2000 nba scoring also dipped drastically. And I'd argue illegal defense was a more dramatic change cause it completely shifted the way defensive schemes worked. In the 90 you could abuse it to create an iso situation consistently. You couldn't do that with zone defense.

I think it's crazy that people think hand checking will do much. It'll help but most teams run 5 and out.

I agree, bring back defence. It shouldn't be a bonus.

I always preferred lower scoring games where teams wouldnt even reach 90 points. It made every basket important and easy buckets were very rare.

Although the scoring has kinda been parabolic over the years, late 90s and early 2000s were low-scoring but if you go back even further, there were really high scoring teams like the Nuggets in the 80s.

Thank you for making this. Great reason why it’s impossible to compare stats among eras like so many people do today. Not to even include lack of spacing and more possessions now

it’s not really just scoring it’s pace of game and spacing. pace changes over time the 2000s were the slowest so obviously the point totals will be lower and the 70s were the fastest so that’s partly why we had people like wilt and oscar robertson putting up insane stats. however averages are probably going to stay a few points higher due to more shooters and the difficulty to guard them but it’s not like defense is gone.

We don’t mind scoring. We do mind refs ruining games

Superbowl 53, where the Pats beat Rams 13-3, was one of my favorite recent games because it was a defensive game. Most people I know didn't like it because there wasn't enough scoring.

I 💯 agree with you, that’s my take too . Offense is exciting, but good defense HYPES ME UP!

Bucks led the league last year with 118, still a lot but the Pacers are currently at 128 ppg because there's only been 16 games played so far.
