Using only the person's name for every reference, even where a pronoun is best used grammatically is awkward, too, but works, is easier to remember, and people can't create an uproar. For example:
"Please give Jan, Jan's paper when Jan gets back from the office. And ask Jan to turn in the final draft when Jan's completed that assignment. Thank you."
Jan's name was over used...but it's what I do to avoid using pronouns that are absurd. In cases where a student goes by male or female pronouns and there's a genuine respect issue, I do go with that and show sensitive appreciation for the kiddo. I'm very much aware that there are kids with sexual ambiguity from birth or caused by development. But, yeah, a 7 ft dude cannot show up, and say today I feel like a girl and you're going to call me Sally today, just bcz I'm arbitrarily demanding it. I hope I made myself clear on this topic. LOL!
