The portal was unstable, which is why everyone thought Abigail died. Since it was unstable, that's why Callaghan wanted to use it to destroy Krei Labs. Besides, Callaghan had no idea what was on the other side of the portal, so how could he be able to find Abigail or even know if he could get back through it?
