If D378 was going to be such an advantageous chokepoint/launch site, that a terrible galactic war is likely to spill forth to take it. We just gave a "Sure, fight", and just build a neutral gate zone to make it moot. A sad sacrifice to make Earth the site, but at least we're more favored standing as a migrant fleet than the Quarians had in ME

very nice story....cant help to think of a potential follow up, where its not sacrifice to remove the excuse for war thats needed.... but the tenacity to endure a slanted war and force aggressors to the negotiation table..
nomad species in a galaxy could be very apt for this...considering even if they earn some 'sanctuary' worlds to place origin monuments on.... they be more keen on mobile infrastructure that be easy to adapt for guerilla warfare compared to 'static' empires...

If there was a true ending, the two warring race could have ties with humans. So much so that they'd actually give up on the idea of war in favor of sparing the humans to sacrifice their homeworld. Though I wonder if destroying the contested warpgate could've been a more viable solution. 🤔

There are several basic survival principles that are violated by sacrificing your home world to provide a solution to a problem that may not necessarily directly or indirectly affect your situation. To gamble and sacrifice a world to get a certain result should not be taken lightly nor in most in thought that 'sacrifice' would not be considered a valid option in the first place.

my thoughts on this story, is disassembly of the entire solar system is not necessary, over 99% of the mass in our solar system is contained within sol, our sun. the effort required to disassemble all planets with having to repeatedly set up the infrastructure around each planet, is also less than the effort needed to start starlifting mass from our sun. this would actually increase the life span of our star assuming we removed the heavy elements, and fed the hydrogen back into it, providing all of the materials needed to build this warp gate.
in addition the rule specified that they had the right to build anything in a races home system. This includes the warp gate, but nothing says that the warp gate needs to remain in the system once built, it could still remain technically in our system if required by building it at the furthest reaches of our star, where it is orbiting sol at a radius of about 2 light years, still putting it closer to sol than any other star system. if it remaining in sol once built is not an issue then they could move it to any of the nearby star systems.
