Powerful earthquake detected near Khorixas

An earth quake that registered 4, 1 magnitude on the Richter Scale occurred in the near Khorixas late on Tuesday and was so intense that the Geological Survey of Namibia will send out a special team to the area to assess damage and gather information from communities affected by the event.
According to a statement issued by the Executive Director of the Geological Survey of Namibia, Gloria Simubali, the earthquake was recorded 44 kilometres northwest of Khorixas. The event occurred at 16:32 and was picked up by all ten seismic stations of the Namibian Seismology Network. The seismology stations are situated in Windhoek, Tsumeb, Kamanjab, Opuwo, Rundu, Katima Mulilo, Gobabis, Karibib, Aus and as far away as Ariamsvlei.
Preliminary analyses performed on the data sets indicated that the event was relatively shallow. It occurred at a depth of less than ten kilometres with a local magnitude of 4, 1.
The Geological Survey said in the statement that people can take precautionary measures when the feel an earthquake. People who find themselves indoors should try to leave the building safely. If not possible people should stand near doorframes or take refuge under tables. People who find themselves outside should find a clear spot well clear of buildings, trees or power lines. People inside buildings should stay still and ensure that they face away from windows. Whether inside or outside, people should always watch out for falling objects.
