Perfect timing. This last week or two I was actually looking at getting health insurance here in Mexico. It sounds like my better option is just to pay out of pocket. I was going to ask you about seeing a doctor at a pharmacy in a future live video, but you already answered that for me as well, so a big thank you for your informative video. Always appreciated.

$800 per year in the US for insurance? Not with my employer! I pay about $3, 500 per year for my daughter and myself and if anything were to happen there is a $10, 000 deductible before insurance will touch a bill. I'm looking forward to moving to Merida so I can stop being afraid of getting sick!
BTW I love your drive and talks! I can see I will be driving around a lot to see a lot of the cool architecture that you show us!

Great info. I've lived in Baja on and off for 35 years. I used to pay cash for health care in the USA but Obama Care made that hard. All of the cash prices tripled after Obama Care came along. Now, what I pay in Mexico is less than my co-pay in the USA usually.

Great overview, thank you for sharing this!
An insurance product is meant to protect us against an unpredictable and catastrophic financial bill. However, many have gotten accustomed to using health insurance like a debit card to pay for day to day clinical care such as prevention, routine visits, and even the urgent care issues like the ankle fracture you mentioned.
The private insurances reimburse the private doctors very little and they pocket the difference. It's much more likely to get better care if dealing with the physician directly and negotiate the cash price ahead of time like any other service outside of healthcare.

So sorry to hear about Christian's injury... I really appreciate you talking about insurance... and Love the drive through town! I know a few people with insurance in Mexico... the one with the BEST insurance that I have heard of just retired from a Educational career . Her husband has different insurance having served 25 years in Mexican Military so they don't typically pay ANY co-pays or anything... The Best insurance I heard about from and EXPAT is a retired guy that pays about a thousand a year for "PRIVATE" insurance. But even with that, he said that often he uses Public health care and pharmacy docs instead of using the private clinics. So yeah.. Still a little conflicted about what to do once I might live there... but certainly appreciate you bringing up the topic.

Having issues getting insurance for my husband, who is a foreign national and needs Dialysis 3x weekly. Out of pocket in Merida, Mexico is $300-500 per session and we can't afford that monthly amount. No one will take you with pre-existing issues.

I don’t know how to feel about this. I paid 20k US for a week long hospital stay in Mexico. No insurance. Out of pocket. I was 45. This was in 2007.
A week in the hospital in the US is a hell of a lot more, but 20k is still a lot of money to most people.
By the way, it was a life threatening illness. Not a preventative colonoscopy.

Careful. IMSS is a public insurance company, besides the prívate ones. It is paid by the employee, the employer and the government. It has its own hospitals. So, it is not the same as Medicare/ Medicaid. Many mexican workers have IMSS as a benefit and a prívate insurance. IMSS is available for mexicans and residents. If you are not an employee, you can ask for it and pay as an external. If you don't have any of them, I think having a prívate one for major health issues is the way to go.

Living in Midwest US out health insurance through work is going up to $6700 a year for family coverage with a $5000 deductible, once deductible is met it’s 80/20.

Dude, are you serious?? The point of insurance isn’t to save you money, it’s to prevent bankruptcy in the face of a disaster. What if one has a major accident or medical emergency? I’ve heard they won’t even treat you if you can’t pay up front! At least here in the states they have to save your life and you can plead poverty on the back end. By following your advice people are risking their lives and savings every time they cross a street. This seems like insane, dangerous advice.

I been watching you a few times and you are the best LOL. I subscribed to your channel. Beside you talking and having your helpful answers I just Love how funny you are also and you are out there driving around. You must be spending a lot of money just driving around in that Dodge with that grande big V 8 LOL. OK, maybe you have more money now since you left the good old USA LOL. OK, let me know if you can drive a Mexican plated car with a Temp residency status visa and also using your USA DL ? Thanks for the answer ahead of time if so.

If you got money Mexico is some of the best healthcare you can get anywhere. If you're healthy this is one the best healthcare systems, if you're not and need high specialty treatment it's still wildly cheaper than the US but not as cheap as some other places.
If you're poor or not wanting to spend a lot of money the public healthcare option is good to cover emergency situations and high speciality visits but you will end up paying for labs and imaging because those have insanely long wait lists for patient's that are not under any high specialty. Medical equpment is also rarely provided.
Another great thing with the public system is that you can enroll your parents or a spouse with no additional costs.
An example of this is my dad who was diagnosed with colon cancer half a year ago, he's currently doing chemo and it's on his 5th session, every session would've costed us around 40000mxn or 2k USD, coupled with the oncology visits, CT scans and the medication which would've costed us a fortune but we paid nothing becaue they're on my insurance.
Transportation and medical equipment can also be provided by goverment aid, provided that you have enough time for a lot of paperwork. It can still be free.
