I just picked up this book.. tbh if you liked this book you would definitely like Jose Saramago’s “The Gospel of Jesus Christ”.. it completely blew me away. I seriously could not put it down. He won the Nobel Prize for that book for a reason. The conversations he has with God and the Devil, and the perspective on what exactly could have happened to Joseph his father and the depiction of what his possible relationship with Mary Magdalene could have been like were so fascinating. There are some parts that are subversive and sometimes comical criticisms of Christianity but i did not find them to be disrespectful. Highly recommend.

This book is definitionally blasphemous. Our Lord Jesus Christ was tempted, but he never once gave in. That is because he is perfect.

A very misleading review, I would say. The problem with this book is that it is not about Jesus from the Bible at all and the same time claims to be so. It is about a fictional character, fully human, I should say, who is stughling with his flesh in his own strength. Not to mention the array of blesphemies, completely unneccessary in the hard labour of capturing the humanity of Jesus in finctional form. That's the first book I am reading by Kazantzakis, I have the feeling I would like mich more some of his other books, as he is a good author, I should say. But he went way too far with this book. Not really sure what exactly he was aiming at.
