Video 1 Introduction to Decimals

This video shows the model Decimal Squares for illustrating the part-to-whole concept of decimals. There are squares for tenths, hundredths, and thousandths from a deck of 57. The shaded amounts of the squares are described by whole numbers to provide a gradual non-threatening introduction to decimals.

After students are familiar with describing squares by colors and numbers of shaded parts, decimals and their names are introduced. Examples are used to talk about parts of things.
