FVR regrets endorsing Rodrigo Duterte, his biographer says

"Mel, I think you're right. I may have made a mistake in endorsing that guy."

Melandrew Velasco, biographer of Fidel V. Ramos and his family, reveals that the late former president regretted endorsing then-candidate Rodrigo Duterte for president in 2016.

"I think after the China visit. There might be some disagreements, the way the country was being ran," Velasco tells One PH's #WagPo!, referring to what possibly triggered Ramos to regret endorsing Duterte.

Ramos supported the presidential bid of the former Davao City mayor in 2016 but he had also been critical of his administration, particularly on Duterte's approach towards China, the United States, and his deadly war on drugs.

Six years after, Ramos' former officials backed former vice president and opposition leader Atty. Leni Robredo's candidacy for president during the May 9, 2022 polls.

"As we look back, there were instances that he (Ramos) was critical of the Duterte administration," Velasco adds.
