Om Birla, a two time MP from Kota Lok Sabha constituency, is the newly appointed speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha
As he succeeds Sumitra Mahajan who held the chair in 16th Lok Sabha, we tell you more about the role of the Lok Sabha speaker. The speaker is the conventional head of the lower house of parliament and enjoys constitutional status equal to that of Chief Justice of India. He or she decides when a member speaks, what gets included in official account and which statements get expunged. The speaker allows Lok Sabha members to introduce the bills or to move motions. He fixes time limit for the debates, puts matters to vote and announces the results, and gets to arbitrate over a dispute on whether a bill is a Money Bill or not. The speaker also gets to decide whether the house will have a leader of opposition.
