Imagine what that 49ers roster would look like if they didn’t make that Trey lance trade

As a 49ers fan Nick is not wrong here. Lynch and Shanahan also rejected Brady TWICE!

The Lance saga isn't even the weirdest thing I've seen as a Niners fan lol.

As a lifelong Niners fan, all I can do is laugh. Nick is right that the whole situation is a mess, and the ONLY saving grace is that we lucked into Purdy. Which by the way, he still has to replicate what he did last year to prove it wasn't a fluke. Greg said it correctly that it's beyond confusing.

*Edit*
Some of ya'll don't understand what I mean by mess when talking about our QB situation. I'm not just referring to just this year. It's Kyle's entire tenure and to a degree beyond that. The amount of miscalculations and bad evaluations the team has made are laughable. Brock is great, but it remains to be seen if he is that after 8 games and an injury. I remember when Kaepernick was crown the future greatest QB ever, but look how that turned out. This was after we passed on A-Rod for Alex Smith. This current regime told us Jimmy G was the answer and even turned away Tom Brady. Only for them to trade the farm for his future replacement, Trey Lance. They told us Trey would be the guy, theough words and drafting him in that fashion. Now, to admit, they whiffed so badly on him is so confusing to Greg's point. That's also why I say they lucked into Brock because he was never part of the plan. If he was, then why was he QB3 last year. He wasn't even QB2 because they instead gave that to the guy they tried to move one from and who didn't practice all summer, Jimmy.

Hence, it's a mess, and I'm not even going to factor in our horrible injury history at the position.

So u traded all them picks so that he doesn’t even become the backup??? This is not what the rams GM meant when he said f them picks 💀

Brou is deflecting. This has nothing to do with Purdy. This is about the Niners’ ability to manage assets. That Trey Lance trade might eliminate their window because of all the assets they moved for him. Nick is right, if they just draft at 12 and trusted their scouting and other position evaluations, a Lombardi felt inevitable. Instead, they took a mammoth gamble when they already had a championship contender and now might have squandered it.

I don't agree a lot with what comes out of Nick's mouth but he's spot on with his assessment. I've been scratching my head about Lance since day one.

If Purdy had no success this wouldn't even be an issue

That driving off a cliff analogy by Nick was pure gold lol

The thing is I’ve seen no 49er reporter say Darnold outplayed Lance

Trey played well in the 2nd preseason game, especially for a guy who didn't practice for a year because of an injury, and whose last full season of play was 4 seasons ago. I'm surprised at the speed with which he is being written off when he barely played in the NFL. Darnold started multiple games over many years & wasn't good but he's being given a chance(happy for him). This kid hasn't even played NFL games. It's the lack of patience after giving up so much for him, that makes shanahan look terrible in my opinion.

Whole thing is sunk cost fallacy… clearly they don’t think Trey lance is going to be good enough for them right now. And they have to win RIGHT NOW. Trent Williams is 35. Their fullback is 33. The whole roster is injury prone. They are going to have to pay bosa aiyuik and god knows who else. This team as constructed is not going to be around forever. Terrible pick in hindsight but hindsight is always 20/20

I remember the media lighting a fire under the niners organization because they were looking at getting Mac Jones. I remember nick specifically putting heat on them. Up to draft night a lot of people were thinking they were gonna pick Mac Jones. But they ended up taking trey lance….i don’t think they niners were ever seriously in love with lance but they gave in to all the hype that was around him at the time and now they’re course correcting.

Nicks' really dying on this hill huh?

Brou is just looking at the final outcome of something that almost never happens. Nick is right this is a terrible process that’s getting bailed out by the literal last pick of the draft🤣

You know things are crazy when Nick is making the most sense. Hes usually the one with the wild thoughts.

nick is honestly my favorite analyst in the world when he gets the passionate over something because you can honestly tell he believes what hes saying without being a hot take artist

I'm curious what Nick has to gain from making this argument. Many teams have done similar things and lost the gamble.

LOL everytime someone is mad that Trey hasn't had enough chances, they forget he's been with the team 3 years, had a couple chances and lost his spot. It sucks yes, but that is the NFL. Sometimes someone better comes along sooner than you expected. Tough. Held to account? Again dude has had 3 years to play for us, he isn't ever ready. lol Nick is so funny. Just let Brock have the rock! Go 49ers!
