great exercise. I'm using the app TimeGuru for this practice. The app has the random mute feature, which mutes the beat at a random time for a random length. Needles to say this makes it even harder to stay in the pocket.

That's really interesting, sometimes the simplest things make the biggest differences, that's well worth a try. Watch some of the reggae greats and they're so on beat, without seeming to make much effort! That's practice atbrhythm right there...

Thanks Rob! When playing slow I tend to drag, when quick I tend to rush hahah thanks for this lesson!

This was awesome Rob, thank you so much. If possible, please could you expand upon the concept of ‘rushing and dragging’ but from an intentional standpoint, like when musicians and artists deliberately push and pull time as an effect? Many thanks :)

This is very hard to do! (I'm a rusher.) I find it helps to imagine a hi-hat in my head and even make the sound of one under my breath. Better still, move my body. Still, evidently moving your hand to subdivide the beat works for you and I sometimes forget to do that. Whenever I do it, it helps me to lock in, so thanks for reminding me of how to remove the rush!
