I always add sugar to my cornbread batter but adding bacon grease takes it to another level. Add butter mix with honey to spread on top. 😋

This Texas granny doesn't add sugar. Every time I eat sweetened corn bread, I feel like im eating cake with my meal. Edit: I always use an oiled iron skillet, heating it on medium high before adding my batter. This step helps the bottom & sides to be browned perfectly, which helps hold the pieces together after cutting. I also cut pie shaped slices immediately after removing from the oven & run the spatula under the pieces to loosen. Then I let it rest for about 5 minutes. Perfect every time! I''m 71 & learned these tips from my great grandmother's recipe.

No sugar and we use left over bacon grease rather than oil. We never throw out bacon grease. Of course my family is from the mountains of NC, waste not want not as my granny always said.

Growing up my mom melted butter in her pan while mixing the batter. That is how she greased the pan and she would pour the rest in the batter. You could see a ribbon of butter throughout the batter!
And put me down for sweet cornbread- just a tad sugar!

I am a born southerner and I love a sweet cornbread to just eat. So my main cornbread recipe has sugar and a little vanilla. That said, when I make cornbread dressing for a holiday meal, I leave out the sugar and vanilla for the more traditional cornbread.

My parents were from Mississippi. As a result, we grew up on homemade corn bread and biscuits. My parents never put sugar in cornbread. We were told that only northerners put sugar in their corn bread. When people put sugar in their corn bread, my oldest sister called it corn cake.

I use additional shredded frozen corn for some texture and butter instead of canola for extra flavor 👌 thanks for the recipe!

I am a southern girl who grew up in MS and my grandmother and great-grandmother never put sugar in their cornbread. So, I would say sugar in cornbread is not a southern thing. I made cornbread without sugar from scratch like my grandmother yesterday and it was the bomb. There are a lot of people that like sweet cornbread and put sugar in theirs. The veggies that I eat with the cornbread has enough sweetness for me. Thanks for the great videos.

i followed your recipe AB, i just substitued the 1/4 cup of oil for a little more than 1/2 stick of melted butter. I did add 1/3 cup of sugar and it came out perfect. not too sweet, just right. i made some cornbread for thanksgiving but this one is way better. def going to be making this often.

Usually I use sugar. However, when I’m making cornbread for dressing, I use a very minimal amount. I also use a minimum amount when making Mexican cornbread. Otherwise, I like sweet cornbread. One thing I’ve never heard before is to whisk it until it’s smooth. I always thought a few lumps was fine and not to stir til it’s smooth. Live and learn!

This recipe is perfect, perfect, PERFECT!!! And easy. My husband and I had two squares each with our supper. Then, for his bedtime snack he had another square microwave warmed covered with honey. Pure goodness. Thanks.

I didn’t grow up adding sugar in cornbread but since my children been grown they always ask I add a little sugar. So occasionally I do add a little sugar unless it’s cornbread to be used in another dish such as dressing then I’ll never add sugar.

All I need to do is learn to measure my ingredients bc all my life I’ve cooked on the dump system bc that’s how I saw my great-grandmothers, grandmothers, my great Aunt and Mother cook. Thanks for sharing your style and recipes!!!

Love me some home made cornbread but over the years, I've gotten into the habit of roasting, peeling, and dicing a couple of jalapeno peppers to add to the mixture.
And yes, I like a bit of sweetness to my cornbread.

I'm from the UK. I am obsessed with southern food. I've just made this and it's the best cornbread recipe I've come across. Pyrex is so much better as well. I had no sugar this time next time I will try with sugar or honey. Love watching your videos.

I grew up eating Jiffy, so I guess I like the sugar taste. My sister makes what she calls friendship cornbread. She puts cinnamon and sugar, I think, 🤔 and it's delicious 😁

The Good Book tells us to live life ‘abundantly” and that’s what u show us with each of ur dishes. What great food; simple and hearty.
About sugar in cornbread, both grand-dads grew up poor on a farm and didn’t add sugar to cornbread -prob thought it was a luxury. Cornbread wasn’t comfort food back then, it was get back to work food. So I’m used to unsweetened cornbread, I’d have to call it cornbread cake then! So great to watch ur channel. All recipes are dynamite, exploding with flavor. Righteous food for all.
