There are a few basic questions worth asking when you begin to study a book of the Bible. Who wrote it? On what occasion did they write it?

In this full-length introductory lecture, Prof. N.T. Wright provides essential background on Luke's Gospel and why it matters.

Learn more in the new course The Gospel According to Luke, available now!

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE
Who did Jesus think he was? What was the purpose of his ministry? And how do we know?

In this course, Prof. Wright ushers students through Luke’s Gospel scene by scene, commenting and drawing out major themes and points of interest.

Luke is a work of serious history, using eyewitness testimony and oral tradition as its source material. It is the history of Jesus of Nazareth – a real, flesh and blood human – whose personal story is at the same time the story of God’s intention to put things right, for Israel and for the whole world. It is the story of a confrontation between the familiar empires of the world and God’s Kingdom, built on a new model of lordship; it is the story of a revolution of healing and feasting, rather than of violence.
Join in the surprising story of God’s visitation and see why Prof. Wright calls Luke ‘the evangelist of prayer, praise, and peace’!

Love you Mr. Wright. Could you speak these two quotes from two of my favorite franchises?

"Who now has the strength to stand against the armies of Isengard ... and Mordor?"

"Good. Twice the pride, double the fall."

Very helpful overview, thank you. I’m really interested in your Temple theology, is there a video where you explain this in more detail? Thanks in advance 😀

Thank you so much for your historic endeavors. I have a request. Would you spell it out 1 out of 4 Roman Historians, such as I know Tacitus and Suetonius…Dio Cassius…But I would like you to spell out for me..V…P….??? ^^which would be a great help. My guess is “Plutarchus?” ^^Thank you in advance.

THEOPHILUS was the High Priest, brother in law of Caiphas and one of the sons of Annas.

Seems to be like this is dating is as relevant as dating the age of the earth and putting that in a box - so to speak.

Are you kidding me??? “Could be that Theophilus could be a fictitious person??” Theophilus was named “κράτιστε”, a title used for NOBILITY. He uses the term again in chpt 23, 24 & 26, each time linked to A RULER.

The term “among us” means that he is NOT writing to Gentiles. Jews mostly used Hebrew names in naming their children (like 10 of Jesus 12 disciples). So “Theophilus” was NOT a common Jewish name, yet here we have a Jewish ruler that carries this name. Who was that??

The High priest Theophilus, brother in law of Caiphas and son of Annas. He was high priest from 37-41 A.D. THAT was when it was written!

The date DOES MATTER because the earlier the date the more reliable. And when you compare Jesus bio to Mohammed and other religious figures JESUS WINS!!

Mohammed bio came 200 years later and is full of MYTHOLOGY! Secular scholars are aching to put a later date on the Gospels IN ORDER TO LEVEL ACCUSATIONS of MYTHOLOGY against it.
