P.s. do NOT get discouraged, you'll get past the initial tough stage with patience + hard work!

So accurate. Nobody expects new hires to know anything beyond basic general coding skills and a strong willingness to learn. Every company has their own unique collection of technologies and it's impossible to find people who know all those techs on the up front. Tip to those new to the biz, don't kill yourself trying to learn everything as soon as possible. Do some tutorials to get the basics and learn the rest as you go. Only work on the clock too; they don't pay you to work off the clock.

Shit, this happened to me. Got hired as a SQL programmer, and brushed up on my RDMS skills for 2 weeks until my start date.
Then, on my first day:
Boss: Aright, welcome aboard. So you're our new SAS programmer!
Me: Que! SAS? I don't know what SAS is...
Boss: Haha, you'll figure it out.

Data Science : Field where they want you to have 10+ years of experience and worked on at least 5 real world projects for an Intern position.

Yup,
I applied for an internship at my uni. The focus of that internship was supposed to be UX design as well as UI design work. For the first 5-6 months I have done nothing but user testing of a prototype in one of our labs using eye-tracking. But for the last 7 or so months I was told to start coding in python and learning to program a neural network in keras. Never worked with python in my life, they just expected me to do it.

😂 welcome to IT, if you make past the first three years you’ll be fine.

I would say it gets easier. But I would be lying, the technology changes every 3-5 years. Most your time will be spent learning new technology and forgetting old technology only to relearn it again when someone asks you to fix a bug in a legacy system.

I can totally relate to this video. I worked in a lab where my responsibilities were split between R scripting / learning, excel analysis + graph creation (in GraphPad), and wet lab work. Every time I had a question about anything regarding R or the data I was working with (mass spec.) the post doc I was to be 'mentored' by would hit me with interactions very much like this. Where I didn't get a chance to fully clarify how he wanted me to achieve some HUGE ask before throwing on another large ask in the same conversation. It was hell. It didn't work out.

Also I am finishing up a data science undergrad now. Really hoping my first employer won't have unfulfillable expectations of me. I really just want a job with reasonable expectations, as then I can actually look good when I put in time and a half, instead of still feeling like a failure.

Luckily I interned at a major manufacturing company. WLB was great because we weren't trying to create cutting edge technology but just track sale predictions based on what filters.

As an IT professional with no computer science degree and trying to break into DS.
Yeah this is putting the fear of God in me 😂

This is hilarious. Also surprised there wasn't anything mentioned about unsupervised learning.

Swear this is so accurate. I interned as a software engineer at a big defense company and they used so many acronyms (all of which they threw around as if I knew them) specific to the company it was like they were speaking their own language. I was told it takes about a year to be of real use to a company

Call me naive, but if my boss ever tells me what IDE to code in i’d just say “you want the job done or not?”

Asking a data scientist to code in java? Crime against humanity.

Very entertaining skit of working in data analyst work. Subbing for more.
