“I’m sleepy” in Japanese 🇯🇵 2 Ways #shorts

眠い {ねむい | nemui} and 眠たい {ねむたい | nemutai} is translated to “I’m sleepy.” But there’s a slight nuance difference as explained in the video.

While 眠い {ねむい | nemui} simply expresses that you’re sleepy, 眠たい {ねむたい | nemutai} expresses that you’re bothered by your sleepy head 😅

For instance, in the video, Sayaka has to finish writing a report but she’s so sleepy and that bothers her.

Same thing happens to
重い {おもい | omoi} and 重たい {おもたい | omotai}🤓

A good way to remember nemutai is for sleepy and not happy about it is that it sounds kinda like “I’m gonna die” which is sometimes used in English to express general discomfort or displeasure

Nemutai is like "I want to sleep!" so it's kind of desperate sounding

I'm Japanese. Someone coments ねむたい literaly means "want to sleep" but that is incorrect. Indeed, adding たい to the verb means "want to" so ねむりたい means "want to sleep." But it is not verb. Some adjectives can end in たい, for example, おもい/おもたい(heavy), けむい/けむたい(smoky). These adjectives have almost same meanings and we care little for the differences but we feel たい adjectives are a little more subjetive and emotional whereas ねむい and おもい are objective.
