I don’t care if the bug is good, if there’s a crunching sound whenever I walk then I’m moving away

It's because cicadas go underground for 17 years to evolve and hide from predators. But if soil temperatures are around 64 degrees they can come out earlier.

It’s not an invasion it’s the brood emerging from underground and it’s actually and important part of the ecosystem

There are 2 kind of cicadas that appear every 17 years and another every 13 years.

For the first time since 1803 cicadas of both kinds awaken at the same time.

It’s because these two species sleep in the ground for over 17 years and come out that’s how cicadas live when they’re not born yet. Both these species are really rare and don’t come out a lot even after 17 years these two species have a bed scene together ever since the mid 1800s

1. Cacaidas are harmless
2. It’s not this bad
3. It’s not just Chicago
4. For like 90% of the day they just stay in the trees

Some Cicada broods take 17 years to come out of the ground, so it taking 17 years makes sense

These are Pharaoh Cicadas otherwise known as the 17 year Cicada as they emerge from the ground every 17 years as nymphs to molt and become adults. Adult cicadas lack mouths and rely on their fat reserves until they run out and die. They’re completely harmless and spend their days mating with as many members of their kind as possible until they die and the process starts all over again.

It’s not exactly an infestation. They come out every 13-17 years so we knew they were coming ahead of time. I have a lot around my house but it’s not bad they don’t do anything.
