This felt like a defacto final. It was Martina’s last best chance to win Roland Garros. She would been favored in the final, but she faced PEAK Pierce here. This was Mary’s year, you could feel it, not just in this match. This is a classic. 2 incredible talents. ❤💙🩵

Another golden opportunity missed for Hingis. She almost never lost to Pierce, and it's tough to imagine her not winning the final against Martinez.

Hingis losing to the eventual champion in three consecutive years. Graf in 1999, Pierce in 2000 and Capriati in 2001, and of course a further time to Majoli in 1997

Hingis was her own worst enemy. The French fans were notorious for influencing matches against players who were not respectful. History is literally littered with fantastic tennis players who could not win at the French Open once the French fans were determined to get on your back. Hingis was basically childproof from winning the French Open because you had to be an adult to figure out the puzzle of the French championship and Hingis was too imature.

why in the world was hingis trying to outslug mary pierce? no one does that, well a very very few (graf, capriati at their very very best, but even they had to change it up from time to time) and certainly not hingis... dumb dumb "strategy" on her part...congrats mary pierce....
