Remembering the 1990 Luzon quake

I am a structural geologist based in the UK. I did a Masters on the Fracture Mechanics of quartz and a PhD on the formation of shear zone s. I continued doing research, particularly on the Devonian basins of Norway and Scotland, until my funding ran out. I started doing consulting work while waiting for that elusive permanent university post to come along. 33 years later I'm still consulting, but I have given up waiting. I've worked mainly on nuclear waste disposal problems and for the oil industry, so no environmental issues at all.

I started on Wikimedia commons in March 2008, although I had already created and uploaded a bunch of images to Wikipedia, I just hadn't thought to bring them here. And now we just had another earthquake here in Luzon, Philippines, on the same month as it happened in 1990, with almost the same magnitude... I could still remember the 1990 one.

I remember this earthquake. I was 11 years old. I used to live in Tarlac, but We were in Manila at that time... We had to go to Canadian embassy to get my visa and my airline ticket. That afternoon, I remember someone shouting “meron lindol, meron lindol”. Everyone was in a panic.

I am so glad my mum survived that earthquake! She was in high school back then and she got a scar on her leg as she was escaping the classroom!

My father told me that he didn't went to school that day because he went to cinema. It’s crazy to think if he went to school i’ll never be born…

Sa mabini, metro manila lahat ng nasa building nasa gitna na ng kalsada nung lumindol yung daan akala mo alon nagcrack talaga. May isang ale di na naghagdan, tumalon sa hagdan mula 3rd floor hanggang 1st floor tapos nakatakbo pa sa takot pero pagkatapos nung lindol ayun pilay na for life. Grabe talaga!

Grade 4 ako nyan, uwian na. Akala nung driver ng service namen niyuyugyog namin yung estribo ng piera. Lumilindol na pala.

I am lucky that I wasn’t born yet. I feel bad for those unlucky of dying in an earthquake.
