The grip issue is Loki's fault. In the original myths he made a bet with some dwarves that they couldn't make the coolest shit ever (paraphrasing) and one of the items made was Mjolnir. Because Loki doesn't play fair he sabotaged the dwarves by turning into a fly and biting them, resulting in Mjolnir having to short a handle, but it was so powerful that the dwarves won anyway

Mjolnir as depicted in Marvel is not designed to be a warhammer. It's basically a magic wand shaped like a hammer, and only effective as a weapon if you have super strength to swing it around.

One of the main issues with Mjolnir is that it was originally supposed to be a two-handed weapon, but Loki transformed himself into a fly to mess with Brokk and Eitri while they were forging it. As a result, the handle ended up being too short, but Thor passed it off as a mere “cosmetic issue” and it’s still his primary weapon to this day (except in the universes where it gets destroyed and replaced, but I’m talking about _our_ universe).

If you think about it thors hammer 🔨 really isn't like other viking style war hammers it's too bulky on the top and the design is more of a cosmetic choice rather then a practical one 😅.the handle is short and the biggest problem is its weight and bulk.
