"They wonder why I'm not enthused to drop, the more visible you get, the more your spiritual is tried" this is a mad bar!!

Ngl beef aside I feel this track. We been letting inauthentic people, clout chasers, opportunists, and yes men control the meaning of hip hop for too long, and it’s really time to take it back.

People thinking this is just another diss targeted at Drake need to actually switch on their brain cells and listen to the lyrics from start to finish. Kendrick has broadened the scope here.

It’s funny, Kendrick has been talking about the flaws of the culture since his debut but for whatever reason people are in belief that everything he says is a shot at Drake.

Edit/Rant: Alright so a few things to unpack here.

#1: I think that having 4 more Grammys than Michael Jackson & being the only rapper in history to win a Pulitzer Prize is more than enough evidence that Drake had little influence in his success.

#2: Since y’all like to talk about the “Drake co-sign”, we seem to be forgetting that he wasn’t going around doing all those features early on because he was the best artist out and he was trying to help other artists succeed, rather it was because he needed the fans. People weren’t buying his records. A Jewish singer from Toronto isn’t exactly ‘fly off the shelf’ material especially in a competitive culture like Hip-Hop. Labels knew that early on which is why it took him forever to get signed. Shit, his first “co-sign” was for an artist name Jenna back in 2008. (Yeah, that’s exactly what I said.)

#3: He’s never had respect in hip hop. Not from the legends & Not from his peers. But he could definitely count on getting it from one group: the underdogs. Because he was and is in fact, an underdog. The image that he’s sold you is one of grandiose delusion. The manipulation of “numbers” and the constant output of having his name in circulation has you buying into the idea that he’s an icon. He’s not. He never has been. Jimmy’s playing dress up & unfortunately you’ve been duped. It’s almost sad to watch to be honest with you because he knows he’s a loser but has to pretend everyday like he’s not. He’s the kid that was bullied in high school and then grew up, got a little money, and purposely goes back around his bully just to show off. It’s pathetic.

This song is clearly underated, it must be one of his best songs. The relaxing and depressing vibe is just perfect, there is only a few songs that feel like this one…
