I really love this video, it really personifies why I appreciate and value Andrew's opinion so much. We don't see eye-to-eye on everything but I understand completely where he's coming from and respect that. While I understand Klavan's point, I must say that as the days pass I become more and more enchanted with the idea of living a luddite lifestyle. Small town, little technology, work the land, befriend the neighbors, go to church every Sunday. What does modernity offer the soul? I realize it offers us physical comfort and stimulus, but I'm not so sure it's worth the moral cost.

Edit: I think Klavan is trying really hard to embrace the future and conservatism at the same time. I think that some aspects are absolutely compatible but there are very significant areas where conservatism is anti-progress and that is how it should be. Using aborted babies for medical research to develop medicines and treatments for diseases? No thanks. I'll gladly take the illnesses. Pushing the definition of marriage to include anything and everything so that marriage becomes a common and worthless union? No thanks. I'll fight against the modernists for the biblical definition of marriage. Embrace the universal hormone treatment that is female birth control? I think this one is already lost but no thanks. Hormonal birth control can very commonly lead to the failed implantation of fertilized eggs. The conservative and common sense viewpoint correctly describes that as abortion.

We are slowly sacrificing our convictions and values as we march into the future, and once we arrive we forget we ever had those convictions and values in the first place. So what do we do? I think we halt modernity, and stop trying to shape it to a conservative mold. I think that is perverting the concept of both Christianity and conservatism. I think it is impossible no matter our intentions.

I agree with most of what Klavan said here. In fact, when it comes to the rights of women, I would say I’m probably more liberal than most conservatives, but with that being said, I simply don’t believe gay rights belong in the same category. As an artist myself, I’ve also interacted with a lot of gay people, but that doesn’t mean I have to approve of their behavior. Sexual immorality doesn’t belong in the same category. Of course, I don’t think anyone is arguing that people should be arrested for being gay. I really don’t even have a problem with civil unions, but changing the definition of marriage causes language to slide into relativism. As a writer, Klavan should know that better than anyone.

I think Klavan is forgetting the profound wisdom William Blake's observation: "One Law for the Lion & Ox is Oppression." It is, perhaps, fitting that a nation like the United States should be progressive and multi-ethnic; yet I have always had the strong suspicion that America's forcing, or even more promoting, its own values and life-style on the other nations of the world, even with the best intentions, is nothing but another form of tyranny. Indeed, forced is just another word for Gleichschaltung: If all nations are made multi-ethnic, the result is as if all paints were dumped into one can: not a glorious, multicolored rainbow, but a dull, ugly monochrome. I personally loathe egalitarianism from the depths of my soul; nor am I the only one; are people like me, who prefer a traditional hierarchy to be forced into a happy-dappy liberal American world? No; I believe in American exceptionalism; if America spreads its ideals everywhere, especially to nations like Germany and Russia where they are entirely unsuitable, not only will those ideals spoil those nations, but they will grow stale and rotten even in America, because not challenged and renewed by opposition, as iron sharpeneth iron. Modernity is not bad, but everything that you've had in your democracy wasn't bad! In fact it's been the best type of government/leadership we've ever seen on the planet. You can have .modernity under a democratic government. You don't have to be communist to embrace modernity. Its all about the leadership, and having the most and best educated people. If you have mediocre people you'll have mediocre leadership whether it be a communism or democracy. If you have enemies within working against the country you will fail if you give power to people who are not qualified to do the job just because you have to be diversive or because youre afraid of being called racist, if you give the power and leadership to 3rd world ignorant socialist people who know nothing about this democracy, it will fail. If you. Vote for a party out of fanaticism even if the candidate is demented or corrupt or whatever you will fail. You can't force people to change, people change when they're ready to. When they realize that what is being offered to them is better than what they had, they'll change. If what they're offering is worse than what you have, why change! Remember the saying: IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!!! If what they're offering takes away your rights and freedoms, enslaves you, controls you and persecute you, it's no good!
