Introduction to SQL Server Failover Clustering

You'd love to know how to make your SQL Servers more highly available, but you're just not sure what "clustering" is all about. We can help! In this 30 minute video Kendra Little shows you how failover clusters make your SQL Servers easier to manage. She uses diagrams and drawings to teach you the strengths and weaknesses of failover clusters and shows why clustering is becoming even more critical for high availability and disaster recovery.

I just stumbled upon this and it made my night. I'm having to migrate from SQL server 2005 to 2012 and I want to do it right the first time. This helped immensely! Thank you!

Thanks for the fast response! It is transactional replication where we are replicating databases from 5 different servers to one replica server for reporting. I will definitely do some further research on this. I just had that thought as we are working on setting up another server (not using replication) right now, and this video made me think about that. Thanks Again!

Very engaging and interesting way of presenting the concept so neatly! Great Job. Thanks!

Great primer on HA and clustering! I will share as "mandatory viewing" with my less technical Ops team members.

Thanks for the cool presentation. I got a better understanding of clustering.

Hi, Jason. Yes, clustering can work well together with replication. Unfortunately this is too big of a topic to tackle in a comment - the answers depend on the topology of the cluster and the type of replication involved. This is the point where you'll want to pick up some books on replication, or bring in an experienced consultant.

We currently have replication in place on some servers for reporting that we are wanting to put in a failover cluster. How difficult is it to keep that replication working in the event of a failover? Is this a case where we would want to upgrade to enterprose and use the availability groups, and use the read only instance?

That was a nice presentation. I have a situation and hopefully you can suggest me on this with your valuable inputs.

1. SQL Server is already installed on 2 nodes
2. Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition
3. Common Storage
4. 1 LUN (eg. Database)

What needs to be done:

Two nodes needs to be clustered for MS SQL database using Microsoft Windows Failover Cluster. The Database LUN needs to be mapped to the Database cluster.

Can this be done. If not, what is the alternative.
