I keep thinking about the story of Atlantis. A people that were so advanced that they destroyed themselves. Advancements are great. But when you make sudden jumps and do not stop to think about the pros and cons and problems that can arise you enter a dark area that is revealed too late. We have all been lead to leap before we look. Tree Huggers got us to stop cutting down our own trees for wood resources, that did not save one tree. Other countries jumped in and started supplying us with wood. Forest fires have turned our natural wood resources into ashes. Converting from wood based products to plastic has created plastic pollution. What sounded so good turned out to be worse than what was being stopped! We really need to step back and take an inventory of what we are doing with AI. If we don't there is no telling what evil can be done with it.

In Michio Kaku recent Google Talks' final Q&A, he recommended "self-regulation" by corporations when asked by an audience how to prevent abuse in the quantum computing development. I disagree with Dr. Kaku. Corporate goals differ from those of societies. Companies' modus operandi are about maximizing profits and minimizing costs... less qualms about near-term public welfare, let alone long-term. Regulatory policies/laws needed to be enacted and enforced by government authorities. or designated organizations bestowed with authority to monitor the industry for accountability and transparency... like erecting traffic signs/lights/cameras at intersections to prevent accidents. Without regulatory safeguards, rogue entities (perhaps backed by states) will upend the status quo akin to current global cyber hacking without clear culprits.

You have all these brilliant human minds, they crunch the math, build the machines, write the code so the computers can start writing it themselves. You are telling us none of these brilliant people ever sat down and watched the Terminator series of movies, maybe with a friend, wife and kids?😂

The basic problem, and it is very basic, is that despite our technological know-how, we haven't figured out how to program ethics or morality. With quantum, it likely is impossible.
