GTA V has been out for a very long time with GTA VI coming out in not too long from now but the Online has been a mess of hackers for a very long time so Rockstar did something about it, and then they didn't enable the anti cheat on Linux.

I would argue that by cutting them from GTAO, Rockstar loves Linux gamers more than anybody else does.

Fun fact, there's already a bypass for BattlEye in one of the most popular cheat menus... So you _can_ play GTAO on Linux... you just have to cheat.

Great work Rockstar.

BattlEye was bypassed in less than 48 hours. Now the mod menus have now figured out how to remotely get players who are not cheating banned via BattlEye... This was always going to be the outcome. There are too many security holes in the way GTA V does peer-to-peer servers and a complete lack of validation in the protocol.

You don't understand. Rockstar is a small indie dev that can't possibly afford to moderate their games. They're barely scraping by as is.

R*: "Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online."
The truth: "BattlEye for GTA Online does not support Steam Deck."

Why does is it always turned against Linux when talking about support. The support is there, just enable it.
Or if there is no real obstacles to support Linux, do not create one. And then claim that "Linux does not support this."

I totally didn't get cheats on GTA to protect myself from other cheaters in the past when I played.

it required more effort to write the part in the FAQ saying it doesn't work on steam deck than it would've required to enable support

Note that they say "Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online", not "BattlEye for GTA Online does not support Steam Deck", so they imply that the Steam Deck is at fault while it is GTA having Linux support disabled in BattlEye.

cutting a game that is on the top 10/15 most played deck games is a clear sign of contempt and outright disrespect. companies should be ashamed to be caught doing such atrocious garbage and made to reverse course and pay damages to those who they wronged.

Deleting GTA V is honestly one of the best decisions I ever made, that game (specifically online) is pure, distilled, pay2win cancer, filled with the worst scum imaginable. Don't know how I managed to sink a thousand hours into it.

Anti-cheat online multiplayer games are literally the ONLY hold-out of gaming on linux at this point. It can be done too! So they can't say "no" because we have examples. Apex Legends is a great example of a game that supports anti-cheat w/ proton. Genshin Impact apparently recently started working. RocketLeague (before Epic bought it) had a native linux build & anti-cheat lol

Server-side anticheat would solve all the game's major problems without causing any issues for players. You don't need spyware on your player's computers to figure out that the guy who survived 10 RPGs to the face is probably cheating.

The problem with those community servers is that the launchers for those ALSO do not run on Linux. So you can't even play online with community servers 🤦

If they're using it on GTA:O as a test bed, then they should also incorporate Linux enablement as a part of their testing.

Don't just assume most hackers are coming from Linux. Get the damn data for it, investigate. Linux users usually only hack a game to make it run on Linux after all.

Until they fix this, it's morally correct to pirate Rockstar games

EA apparently did a similar thing with EA WRC not too long ago. I was checking it out because it was on sale and apparently the linux users who have played the game for months are now not able to play any more from what I understand. I just kept my money, but it's a very crappy situation to be in if you have enjoyed the game for months (or years in the case of GTA V).

I'd like to make it known that BattlEye didn't really do anything. Mod menus still work so

GTA 5 has been an impressively cheater-heavy shit show from day one, and they were technically inept on a ridiculous level. The game downloaded a JSON manifest on start which contained a lot of tunables cheaters loved (like reward multipliers, etc). The kicker: it was downloaded without any form of encryption or signature, not even SSL. So all you had to do was hijack that specific domain in your local network or even just on your local pc, host a web server that serves a modified version of that file locally, and you are done. Since there is no server verification, the game was essentially just assuming everyone was using the same parameters.

I say this too many times, but I'm still amazed wine and proton works as well as it does, and also how efficient the steamdeck is.

I love this little guy.

Let’s say it together: Client side anti-cheat is useless and it’ll never work.

The fact that developers demand you give them the master-key to your computer in order to deploy malware and it still doesn’t work, is absolutely crazy.
