Window Tiling on macOS using Sequoia and older versions

In this quick tips video, I demonstrate the new window tiling feature in macOS Sequoia along with its keyboard shortcuts, and show you how to remove the window margins.

For those who want more window tiling control, or have an older version of macOS, I demonstrate how to accomplish the same thing with a low-cost third-party application.

Love Magnet, especially the 2/3 1/3 window setup.

Nice tips! The run through is appreciated! I used to use Moom for windowing, and Spaces (in OSX) for having different apps in different workspaces though now I don't really bother with anything beyond CMD-tabbing between apps!

Hmmm… I have an Apple Extended Keyboard with Touch ID. The need to use the FN/Globe key which is far away from the Control key, making it a more difficult keyboard shortcut.

Relly useful tip about hte Magnet custom sttings. I didn't think this was possible, but then saw the app had been updated a couple of days ago. I now have custon top and bottom right thirds to go alongside my full height left two thirds on my 4K monitor (I'm only on Sonoma on my work Mac as the OS upgrades are IT manager controlled - and Sequoia isn't signed off yet).

I’ve used Rectangle (previously Spectacle) for a long time. Similar, albeit less feature rich to Magnet.

I've been using this, and watching the video made me realize there is an update I hasn't been aware of. Did the update, and the traffic light zoom button hover menu is much more useful now. Thank you! 🤗

Perhaps they’ll decide that widescreen monitors are a thing and support vertical thirds or even vertical quarters on super wide.

Perhaps when they officially allow this in Vision Pro virtual desktop in December it may appear.

The tiling function in Sequoia is okay. A nice feature for those that did not have a tiling app before. I do still think that the apps by other developers do a better job at some things. For example, as far as I know Sequoia window tiling does not support application windows keeping the size they had while tiled if you decide to drag them out of their tiled position. I also have seen some bugs where resizing a tiled window would result in that resizing being undone at some point, the app windows then go back to the size they had when you first tiled them. One feature I have not seen in other apps but that Sequoia does have, is seen when you use the option to tile two windows (one left, one right) and then hover the mouse in between those windows: a visual element appears that you can grab to adjust where the split between the windows is. If you drag it one half will get wider while the other half shrinks in width at the same time. I noticed this when I had margins on windows enabled.

Best feature: The ability to turn off the gap!

Tiling is something I’ve been doing on Linux die absolutely ages, Windows was very late to the party and macOS even more so. What I don’t understand is why the major OS’s took so long with what is a fairly simple upgrade.

I love tiling and as such have been using Magnet for years on Mac.

One thing I don't like about Sequoia is that it requires you enable the "Displays have separate Spaces" feature to get the new tiling features to work. I don't have that enabled. I've never liked it. They also broke option clicking the green bubble to maximize if you have that Spaces option disabled and have "Double-click a window's title bar to" set to Minimize in the Desktop & Dock pref pane. I can work around it by changing it to "Zoom" but it does change my workflow a bit.

There's a chance I may be the only person in the world that has that configuration but it's how I prefer to handle my window management and it all worked as expected prior to Sequoia. I've filed feedback but have a feeling it won't be very high of a priority to fix if ever. I've been using ShiftIt for years for keyboard shortcut window management so I'm not really missing out on the tiling features that much.

Great video.
All this FN reminds me of Finn on Star Wars.

I have magnet for ages. I also don't like the new windows option, because it leaves a space between windows. It's annoying Apple still doesn't get it right.

The thing I hate most about WIndows is the way it thinks I want to tile windows when I just wanted to move something aside. I have very resolutely not enabled this nonsense on my Macs. Also, to enable all this stuff you have to enable a separate space for each monitor, which is crazy with the multiple menu bars etc.

I'm old skool....

What about quarters? Or automatically tile all open windows?

could have mentioned a free alternative like rectangle

Apple late as always. I use Magnet, and I refuse to learn different shortcuts.
