Ok I fully expected Jay to get choked up but Adam was the true plot twist 😭

I think Copycat is about Bluey's understanding of the unexpected. She knows death is a thing but was never the less blindsided by the bird dying. In replaying it she is able to set her own expectations going in and is ready for the worst, but even then it didn't end the way she was expecting. In the end she is left with an understanding and acceptance that things can happen that are out of one's control.

Awww, Adam... I wish to give you all the virtual long-distance hugs after "Copycat". Welcome to the club of "That Bluey episode sucker-punched me on levels I didn't see coming"

Adam I’m so sorry that this episode hit so hard. Peaches was loved by everyone both at your home and those of us that never met her. Reaching out with a virtual hug 🫂

Bluey has perfected the art of last-minute complete emotional devastation. I love this show.

SLOP IT UP, BLUEY GOBLINS!

Also, as a dad of 2 NICU babies, "Early Baby" hits real, REAL close to home.

Seeing Adam break, wasn't expecting that. It's okay to cry, and Bluey will get you in the feels, but I thought Jay would cry at Copycat. There are a lot of episodes which will get you, but there's also some funny ones [Sleepover for example] The first half of season 1 is more "kid show" episodes, but it'll get better in later seasons. That's not to say early episodes are bad, just going from good to great.

I have seen the Copy Cat episode several times with my kids, but 2 new things happened while watching this reaction. 1) I have never made the connection that Bluey was still copying her dad until Jay mentioned that. 2) I have never cried during this episode, yet here I am misty eyed with these 2.

We as adults understand death. We understand what it means. Bluey is still not able to get what it means. She knows she is sad she needs to deal with it in play but still is not able to get it. We like Adam get it so it hits different. I watched my kids do the same play and move on. It takes a long time to grasp what death means.

I want to give Adam the biggest hug and tell him it is okay 🥺 (it’s going to get worse but I still want to reassure him)

11:40 Oh no! At first I was like, 'wow he really felt that one, this is a good reaction, ' but then you had such a sad face I'm so sorry! Hugs from a stranger; I assume the topic must have been triggering. Glad you took a break.

9:33 And it was at this moment that they discovered that Bluey isn't afraid to hit the hard topics, and unlocked a whole new appreciation for a 'kids show'.

It’s absolutely crazy how surprisingly mature the stories are in bluey. Like what do you mean you’re bringing up death and premature birth

I work with young children, some of them severely traumatized, and to me "Copycat" is the most profound episode of Bluey. It gives such important insight into the development of kids at this stage, in such a poignant way. Intellectually, most of us "know" that kids are little sponges, soaking up everything around them. But we don't always consider the realistic consequences of that; in a traumatic moment, we don't think about the fact that these kids are looking to us, their adults, to know what to do and how to react. This is why modeling behavior is so, so important. How you react to a frightening/dangerous situation could very well set the tone for how your child will react to similar situations for the rest of their life. It's equal parts terrifying and fascinating to me as an educator.

That, and just the more basic reality many don't consider before becoming parents/educators/childcare workers; that the day will inevitably come where we have to explain something like death to a child. A child who, by all rights, should be too young to have to consider such things. But the world isn't usually that kind. Circumstances will eventually arrive where it's inevitable, and while it may seem like kindness in the moment, the worst thing you could possibly do is avoid the subject. Kids need to understand things, it's one of their strongest drives. If we don't explain things, they generally won't leave the subject alone, they'll just draw their own conclusions, and who knows what harm could come of that. The instinct to shield and protect is understandable, but it's so important to rise above it and arm our children with knowledge.

But yes, play is an incredibly important part of how kids learn and process. It's why things like play therapy exist, for kids too young/traumatized to engage with talk therapy. It's how they learn social boundaries, explore and experiment with new concepts, test the limits of their minds and bodies for the first time... It's hugely vital in ways we're still coming to fully understand, from a scientific standpoint. It's also one of the best ways to build a relationship with a child; I mean, it's basically the only way kids make friends with each other. But the first time you see a child using play like this to process something traumatic can be intense, to say the least.

As a more upbeat (ha!) sidenote, I absolutely adore the music in "Copycat" and it may well be one of my favorite tracks in the whole show, up there with "The Sign". The way the melody follows after itself, almost tripping over itself in this playful romp, only to suddenly sober to the reality of the dying bird. Then that same playful track takes on an almost melancholic impact as it resurges for Bluey's reenactment, then triumphant as Bingo unknowingly defies death, if only for the duration of the game. Just so much context-based versatility in such a fun and well-crafted piece.

Copycat ending with the shot of birds flying away was a nice touch 🥲

Oh boy, here we go, Copycat is definitely the start of Bluey's deeper episodes 😭

The fact that Bluey learned to cope with and understand the budgie dying by re-enacting the whole experience with Bingo and Chili was so unexpected for me, but so real and mature for this series. Children learn how to understand things many different ways, and Bluey found her own way ;;

Also Sleepover is a whole metaphor for taking care of drunk friends.

As I see the image of Copycat on this video's cover, I can finally say something...

I was born a premie. Born super early (about 3 months early), 1pound 13ounces. I had to be in the NICU for an extra 3-4 months. My mom said it was the most terrifying moment of her life. I'm a healthy 35yo woman, so I thank every lucky star that I'm still alive.

I showed this Early Baby to my mom, and it was a nice bonding moment between us.
