They tossed out the best feature, a physical, visibly distinct switch

I like being able to flip the mute switch in the movie theater without my screen turning on and letting everyone know I'm on my phone.

So now there is no way to tell if the phone is mute or not. Another step back.

TERRIBLE IDEA. No way to look at the phone and confirm it's silent without turning on the screen! When in court, movies, etc, it can be very helpful to be able to quickly look at the silence switch and confirm that the phone won't be beeping or ringing in the middle of a movie, meeting or court session. I hate it when Apple removes features in the name of saying it's a better phone now! I love the Apple ecosystem, but as I am in court and have meetings frequently, this one might just be a deal killer. At least add a LED to the middle of the switch and illuminate or blink when the function of the switch (ie mute, etc) is "activated". Remember Blackberry sold a ton of devices based on 2 things: First, a great (for its time) keyboard, however second in my view was the little red light on the top of the phone that blinked when you had a new message, etc - same concept as the visible indication on mute - easy to glance at the phone to tell if a critical function was engaged.

The silent switch was the main reason I switched back to Apple from android. It was more convenient.

So they won't allow to customise the soft buttons on lock screen for camera and torch but here you go they messed up the most useful button on the iPhone
