"Leigh Bardugo is way out of my reach..." Says the guy who's interviewed Jim Butcher and Brandon Sanderson.

She's the type of person who apologizes for bad english and proceeds to speak better than most americans

I think she made a really good point: you can't judge a YA book by Adult expectations and that doesn't mean is worse, it's just different.

it’s cool that he’s bringing on people who actually read the genre (YA) so we can have a more balanced discussion

I love how she's all dressed up while Daniel's still in his pajamas

I am a 40 year old YA reader. I also read adult literary fiction and I think among peers my age, we read just whatever is entertaining and/or that’ll satisfy our appetite. I liken it to movies. Just because I’m an adult doesn’t mean I only watch darker, rated R movies. I love me an animation or a rated PG movie if it’s something that’ll entertain me. I don’t see people saying adults watching Stranger Things are watching “down” so why should that be for books.

What's this? A civil discussion about YA fantasy? Man, 2020 is a strange year. Loved the conversation you two!

I kinda want to see Daniel and ReadWithCindy have a discussion about fantasy or YA or YA fantasy.

Conclusion - do not read Ya with Adult fantasy goggles on. Expectations must be different. If it's not for you, it's not for you!

“I like the cheese” is all that needs saying.

I love Leonie! You both did such an amazing job at talking about why this is such a difficult and layered conversation! You were both so eloquent and balanced!
What you said about romance in YA fantasy is so interesting because I've found in adult fantasy (from what I've read) the romances tend to focus on the idea of a person like in the name of the wind (my all time favourite book), the farseer trilogy and witcher and less about the relationship and shared experiences which I think is better done in YA fantasy even if a lot of the times this starts out as 'insta love'

I really, REALLY wish that I had enjoyed Children of Blood and Bone, but alas. I can't say I understand why she recommended that one to encompass the whole of what YA is, but kudos to her for trying to explain it! Great video and discussion!

Side note: I wrote this comment before she recommended This Savage Song, which is my ALL TIME FAVORITE. Highly recommend for anyone who doesn't like romance 👌🏻

To me, the big difference between an Adult book and a YA book is its level of awareness that it itself is a story. YA seems built with a greater sense of self-awareness that it’s a fictional construct where tropes occur and patterns play out and the reader is pulled in with promises that specific reader-experience goals will be met, even in cases where the facade is more polished. Adult seems less easy for the reader to walk in and know what to look for or where the story will go. YA tends to have more of metatextual function than Adult does, and I think YA readers step into a book hoping for expectations to be met and Adult readers go into a book hoping for its narrative possibilities to be unpredictable. Harry Potter was never going to end with him losing to Voldemort, and people would’ve been disappointed if he had. If Harry Potter was Adult fantasy, he very well could have. That sense of true danger is where Adult fiction derives its power.

Oh my gosh yes, Why did I not expect this. Daniel, you’re awesome, thank you so much. My favourite YA booktuber and fantasy booktuber in the same video, thank you so much.

This was great to watch. I love the way Leoni sticks to her guns and isn’t trying to convince anyone to turn to YA

Wow an Adult reader and a YA reader discussing instead of arguing-
But seriously this was such a respectful video! It warms my heart to see two people who disagree carry out such a respectful discussion!

I discovered Daniel and Leo's channel around the same time 2 years ago. Seeing this makes me so happy.

This is going to be good. I watched her discussion about what you said and couldn't help nodding to a few points as I did yours.

Edit: It was great. Although you both didn't discuss preference. Some people just love the "YA vibe" and I wanted to see how you both would talk about that face to face. Also in her video she said as YA matures it's leaving behind the younger side of YA which I found interesting. Is it because much of the YA market are adults and this is due to marketing or is it something else?

Oh well, I hope more videos like this come up in the future. Thanks!

This video actually changed my mind and I am going to read her recommendations. I've always enjoyed YA but I do look down on it. I even select YA books when I want to not be too invested in my read. I hope these books change the way I feel about that.
