How do we feel about the opening round this year? I'm pleasantly surprised in some ways, and confused in others (as usual for goodreads). Have you voted yet? Which is your favourite category?

I can’t believe they didn’t even state the narrators for the audiobook category, what’s even the point of it then

Thank you for stating that it is NOT a literary award! I keep thinking the exact same thing when people say "it's just a popularity contest". Duh. It's right there in the name "Readers Favorite Books of 2024".

Love seeing your views on all of these, so many American books! ❤

i can imagine the audiobooks category is pushing people to audible, considering they also do their 3 months for 99p at this time of year...

It's basically Goodreads Popularity Awards really - still interesting to see what's on there but as there's no way most people voting have read most/all of the books in the category the winners are almost always just the most popular

Strongly agree w the history nonfiction except for Rebecca Nagle’s book - American history is overrepresented but I don’t think Indigenous American histories are, esp by Native authors, and whilst America is young, Indigenous America is ancient. I don’t know if her book will go into that, but I get sad we get all this American history that rarely looks back before colonial encounter, that might be the archaeologist in me speaking 😅

Also the siege book is British! Not that that makes me (also British) wanna read it…

Wait, people vote for books they barely like?! I only vote in a category if I really enjoyed a specific book. Have I been doing this wrong!?

I didn't think I would get on with them at first but I adored the rebel blue raunch series - they are a lot of fun & deal with some difficult topics too, they're a bit like a spicier Emily Henry imo - I came away obsessed and wanting to book a holiday on an American ranch 😂

Just wanted to say that The Bright Sword is my favorite book of the year so far, since you said you hadn't heard much about it. It's an Arthurian legend retelling, except it mostly takes place after King Arthur's death. It thought it took an interesting post-colonial lens (as in, post-Roman empire) to that canon.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles is brilliant, one of my faves of the year.

I think The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah could be worth a try if you’re curious about her work! I’ve read a lot of Kristin Hannah but only because I loved The Nightingale and have kept reading to see if anything else would match it… so far not so good 😅

Completely agree with you about the cosy books. Theyre all about cafes, bookshops, libraries, bla bla bla so repetitive

I got 65% through The Four Winds and it was just so depressing all the way through, I had to DNF. I understand the history it’s based on is just as bleak but then I’ll just research that rather than immerse myself in the depression and despair.

I think that Goodreads is owned by Amazon so it’s not really surprising that it’s so US focused. Lots of people reading about themselves.

The Invocations was dark and quite gory with a large dose of female rage if that sounds interesting to you

I do not like Kristin Hannah, everyone raved about The Nightingale and I’ve read so many WWII books that were so much better. I loved Assistant to the Villain, it worthwhile picking up and see if it works for you.

As someone with chronic pain and illness, I had real problems with Intermezzo. One of the characters has chronic pain and I hated how Rooney portrayed her. The farther I get from when I read it the worse it makes me feel. Everyone I’ve seen has loved it though, it may just be a me issue. I liked it other than that plot point but I just cannot get past it.
