"You don't have to be dysfunctional when somebody else is behaving dysfunctionally" Woooo, a few generations have REALLY needed that message.

"Helping them to see some of the shadows.... without demonizing them."
Great point. That's exactly how my son reacted to my mother's antics. I tried for so long to keep him from having to see or hear her manic episodes. I didn't want him to witness what he witnessed. Mostly because I'm assuming it will effect him the way it effects me, not taking into consideration that I only get as upset as I do because of all the horrible memories I have of other times she acted that way, etc. I'm having a trauma response & he's legit seeing one part of an outburst- not my childhood, not what I said to her earlier that day, not what she said to me before outburst.
Wonderful perspective.

yes boundaries are for self not other! teach them by giving them a sense of self and they learn to say nope! instead of excusing snd enabling ugly behavior

This is so true. Teach kids discernment before it is too late.

That's me and my wife ever since our 1 year old was born. But her parents aren't proud of us because we should be going out there leaving the baby at a daycare to be more financially successful. Thankfully we don't listen to them.

I taught my daughter, early on, that when people are hurtful its because they are hurting (and need compassion not judgment). From this place, in grade 1, she interacted with her 1st grade teacher with compassion when teacher was cranky and shift her energy/behavior. When teacher was frustrated that kids weren't following directions, my daughter would talk to the class from a place of encouraging compassion and cooperation so everyone would benefit. She quickly learned that magic happens when you come from this perspective vs from a place power-overing others.

Very true! There are a lot of misunderstandings, parents telling kids they are not allowed to play with a certain other kid in school. I told my son that the difficult kid probably didn't have any friends. Next thing I know my son says he is now friends with the difficult kid. Fear rules our world.

I felt ashamed of not loving my family. I gave them the love back and removed the trust and adoration. Beautiful move on my part.

Absolutely, people are just different. You can't be judging every thing and everyone because they don't align with what you think is the correct way to be. It creates jerks. Thats what you are to all those you treat as less than you. Just a bunch of judgemental jerks.

So yes I agree although the time when I heard that said to me as a kid was when I realised I had been sexually abused by my uncle and grandfathers brother. I spoke up and went to tell my mum and Aunty and they said shh we know we just don’t want to upset grandad. Then I had to walk outside confused and smile for a family photo with me standing next to them. Wow.

I read that doing one art thing and one music thing every day is helpful. I took our son to momand tot things. Music camp.
