I had no practice when I capsized my sit on top in 8-10 foot swell that I unexpectedly encountered out on the ocean. Fortunately, had an emergency plan that I didn’t have to use. I ended up being able to get back in and paddle away with my life and my survival kit. If you hit the ocean without practicing capsizing, make sure you’re in good shape or better yet practice capsizing before you have to do it for real. It was a more exhausting experience than I even thought possible. Practicing might seem like a pain in the neck, but doing it for real for the first time in an actual survival situation is downright scary.

Found this channel last summer and have watched most of them. They contain great lessons for anyone starting out and the occasional kayaker. I have forwarded this channel to our kayaking group and received positive feedback. Thanks

Those oceans waves are so scary looking!! I can’t even handle a breeze more than 4 or 5 mph. But I LOVE to kayak, sit on top kind, it is very relaxing. And I am fat and old (53) but still enjoy it

Re forward stroke technique...best instruction I've had is to think "PUSH UPPER - GUIDE LOWER". This accomplishes several things. Pushing the upper hand forward instead of pulling with the hand close to the water brings the big muscles of the shoulder and back into play, providing a lot more power than the relatively smaller and weaker arm muscles can apply. Besides being much less tiring, it also induces natural torso rotation. The lower hand acts more as a guide than as a source of power. You can often spot paddlers who use the PUSH UPPER approach; they'll seem to move ahead with noticeable short spurts in each stroke, with a sort of 'hitch' midway when switching sides, to get as much glide from the stroke as one can...

Good rules I've been taking the kayak at my rental cabin out the and I think I'm going to have to buy one. It's a great upper body and core exercise and my knees need rest days from biking.

I haven't practiced getting back in my sit in kayak, but I'll give it a try.

What kind of kayak is your sit on top? I'm having a hard time finding the perfect beginner kayak.

hello, i have chronic back issues and am not able to rotate my upper body much at all. I could still kayak and take it easy, right? I plan to just try and use my arms at first, and go real slow on calm canals.

Is that seat specific to your sit-on-top, or will it fit others?
