Bernd Rosemeyer crash site and memorial

In this video I take you with me to the Bernd Rosemeyer memorial on the German Autobahn A5, between Frankfurt and Darmstadt. On January 28, 1938 German racing driver Bernd Rosemeyer had a fatal crash on this site during a record attempt with his Auto Union. With a speed of 430 Km/h he lost control after a gust of wind brought his car in imbalance.

At the crash site a memorial was erected and a small parking was built which was named after him. In February 2015 the parking was renamed in Bornbruch-West, but the memorial is still there.

Thanks for watching this video.

“One solitary figure came walking in our direction. It was Dr. Gleaser, the medical official for the Mercedes and Auto-Union teams. His face was solemn as he stepped up to our car. 'Dead!' he said. 'He's lying on his back in the woods and looks as if he's still breathing' I pressed my lips together At that instant I felt all life had stopped. Our hearts were congealed It was inevitable – how could anyone survive an accident at that speed? But we hoped for a miracle, So had he, Bernd Rosemeyer, the personification of youth, of heroic courage. Smiling as if it were sheer play, he had won his victories and yet he too had to pay for them and fate demanded the highest payment from him.I would never forget him, Rosemeyer, my comrade. Dr. Gleaser remained standing by the car, his head bowed.I shook his hand and I shivered, turning the car around, we drove back into town. As I write this it is 1958 and since that fateful day, twenty years have gone by. The gap Rosemeyer left behind has never been filled.” Rudolph Caracciola 'A Racing Car Driver's World'

Thanks man, I mourn the loss of history with the wilful destruction of the great racetracks and connected infrastructure of the past. Corporations are the worst vandals there are or could ever be, thanks for keeping track of this priceless history. I'm in Australia, so seeing this stuff is difficult and costly. We have lost a couple of great tracks to progress, the best of those being Oran Park in NSW. It's becoming a housing estate now. :(

Ciao Herman. I had not seen this video yet. I wanted to see where this place is. In the video description, did not you put the Google maps coordinates? Always some nice discoveries on your channel! Good boy!

Please what is not mentioned is at the time of his death he held the fastest speed ever recorded ..he was going for a second run to ratify it. German heros forever!! Youth and a dream which was and now must be once again Germany.

Motorsport is never 100% safe but we have made it safer for today’s and tomorrow’s race car drivers.

R.I.P to those who gave their lives for the development of a safer Motorsport’s future🙏🏻

Schönes Video, Interessante Fakten. Kannte weder den Unfall, noch den höllischen Vorgang, gerade bei den damaligen Sicherheitszuständen. Ein guter Fahrer, der leider zu schnell von uns ging

I always heard he got airborn right under the bridge (cause the air is kinda more "compressed" in there), but the car was found in front of it ? O.o Or did his car go over to the other side ?
